Ever since Reagan won election in 1980 against an unpopular incumbent Southern Democrat and in 1984 in a landslide against a poor candidate, both the Democrats and the Republicans have moved to the right.
Just compare Reagan and the Bushes to Ford and Nixon, or Clinton and Obama to Carter and LBJ and JFK.
Meanwhile, the number of people supporting liberal policies has grown. Around 70 percent of the public supports the public option, if you explain it to them correctly. A majority of Americans believe we are moving in the wrong direction. And less than half the population truly believes that the insurance cartels should have control of health care.
Is it any wonder that the disconnect between the politicians and the public has widened?
