Superintendent accidentally fires gun during class
Superintendent accidentally fires gun during class

BILLINGS, Mont. — The superintendent of a rural Montana school district says he was showing students his black powder muzzleloader when he accidentally fired the weapon into a classroom wall during a history lesson.

Dwain Haggard, who used to be a Civil War re-enactor, was showing the gun to five students in Reed Point High School's American history class Friday when it fired.

No one was injured, and Haggard says he can't explain how the weapon was loaded.

He says he usually fires a cap during the demonstration, but this time there was a loud bang and the room filled with smoke.

The ball shot through the "o" in the word "North" on a wall map.

3. Umm..
He can't explain how the weapon was loaded?

Don't you check for that as an automatic safety procedure
before taking a gun among other people?

12. You do if you're a responsible owner.
At least 3 rules broken here-

1. assume all guns are loaded

2. keep your booger picker off the bang switch.

3. Never point a gun at something or someone you're not trying to destroy.

4. know your target and what's behind it.

6. Loading a black powder pistol takes a very long time and can't be done "accidentally"
Even a black powder rifle takes about a million steps. Something is not right with this story.

8. He'll be heading NYC or D.C. schools
At least he fired a gun and not a boatload of teachers.

13. I had a civil war rifle hanging above my bed as a child.

My god father had his grandfather's Civil War rifle hanging on a rack above my bead when I was a child. It made an impression on me. He was a high school Principal and a Scout Master for 40 years. This story reminded me of that.

I an not going to condemn the guy but it is difficult to see how someone could make that mistake. Black powder is nasty stuff and the weapon should have at least been cleaned after the last time he fired it.
