Monsanto's Mutant justice: two Supemes have conflict of interest
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 08:52 AM by SpiralHawk
Since we now know the Republicon-stacked Supreme Court thinks corporations are people with all the rights of people, and the right to pump unlimited megabucks into elections, it will be perversely interesting to see how ex-Monsanto lawyer Clarence Thomas (R-corporatist) weasels his way along as a humunous Monsanto case comes before the Supreme Court...He 'thinks' he has no conflict of interest.

http://www.lavidalocavore.org/diary/3357/ex-monsanto-lawyer-clarence-thomas-to-hear-major-monsanto-case

"In Monsanto v. Geertson Seed Farms, No. 09-475, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case which could have an enormous effect on the future of the American food industry. This is Monsanto's third appeal of the case, and if they win a favorable ruling from the high court, a deregulated Monsanto may find itself in position to corner the markets of numerous U.S. crops, and to litigate conventional farmers into oblivion.

"Here's where it gets a bit dicier. Two Supreme Court justices have what appear to be direct conflicts of interest..."

(snip)

1. he "THINKS" he has NO conflict of interest?!? He was Monsantos lawyer for years.
Thomas has to be recused - whether he "thinks" he has a conflict or not.
Can a justice be forced to recuse himself in a case like this?

4. You got it, PB - but republicons DO NOT DO honor or integrity
so I imagine Monsanto Man Thomas will just lick his chops at this opportunity to ingratiate himself further with his corporate cronies...

6. I may be wrong
But the only person who can recuse a Supreme Court Justice from considering a case is that Justice. So if Justice Thomas doesn't think he has a conflict, then he doesn't. Keep this in mind the next time some odious judicial appointment is crammed down the American people's throats and we're told that we have to keep our powder dry for a fight that really matters. They ALL really matter to someone. In this instance, it matters to anyone who eats.

3. Bingo, and where did the seeds come from.
Monsanto.

Last I heard they had a 90% corner for some seed markets. LOL

That news alone should make every real conservative turn there head, but guess what, market arguments for conservativeness is a ruse.
