Utah Governor Signs Controversial Law Charging Women and Girls With Murder for Miscarriages

Critics are worried the law will open up a Pandora's box of unintended legal consequences.

On Monday afternoon, a controversial Utah bill that charges pregnant women and girls with murder for having miscarriages caused by "intentional or knowing" acts, was signed into law by Gov. Gary Herbert.

11. probably unconstitutional or will be when the governor's mistress
spontaneously combusts from carrying the spawn of satan. (I don't know if he has one but you *know* he does. Probably.)

2. Intent will be
tough to prove. Witnesses would be hard to come by, I would think.

3. This effectively bans abortion.
They are just substituting another word for it, and in fact broadening the number of people who can be charged..

A 'miscarriage' is a 'spontaneous abortion'.

6. If it weren't for Utah I would go to Nevada or Cali
more often.

Gas up in Grand junction CO and try to get across without speaking to anyone.

8. Gary Herbert's father, desperate to keep his son from wrecking his real estate business...
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 12:45 PM by Umbral
launched his career in politics, and foisted him onto the backs of Utah County residents as a Commissioner. Utah County, desperate to keep Herbert from wrecking the already shaky edifice of its government (and hopefully ending his career gracefully), foisted him on the backs of all Utahans as a candidate for Lieutenant Governor. Obama, desperate to impose some misguided notion of bipartisanship, appoints Utah's relatively moderate Governor to an ambassadorship, thus securing Herbert the top position in Utah government. A position he's likely to hold for at least one more election cycle.

Nothing succeeds like failure, if you're a Republican.

9. Mars was a vast, uninhabitable wasteland, much like Utah.
Although unlike Utah it was eventually made liveable.
