UPDATED: 9:15 am PST March 10, 2010

THERMAL, Calif. -- A woman with a gun robbed 11 customers at a market and got away with $6, Riverside County authorities said.

A Sheriff's Department statement said the woman, armed with a semiautomatic pistol, went to La Chicanita Market in the town of Thermal at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputy Herlinda Valenzuela said the woman confronted 10 customers in the store and one person who was entering the market.

She then fled in an old car.

5. Everybody is using Debit/Credit Cards now
Funny how it used to be that computers would introduce a paperless society. The volume on my desk hasn't changed but it sure has in my wallet. I never have more than $20 cash in there.

8. But thats your choice

I still carry cash because I'm don't like having every purchase I make tracked. The only thing I use my debit card is for bills and gas.

Plus I think getting into the habit of swiping a card all the time is bad. If I can see the cash in my wallet I will be more careful about spending it willy nilly. But I did use my debit card exclusively for awhile and it was much easier to spend like crazy. I guess it kind of makes you not think of it as cash.

9. Especially now when you write a check, they scan it and hand it back
meaning you have to dispose of it. It's easier to swipe an ATM card even than to count out a few bills in your pocket.

Still, it's great to pay cash in places you know Big Brother is watching, like bookstores.

12. As a small business owner
I have to respectfully ask, please please please, dear people, don't use these cards for small purchases. I pay the bank 35 cents for every swipe of a debit card, and 20 cents plus 2-5% for every credit card. Since the average purchase in my store is under $4, that's a big hit. And those rewards points banks hand out, who do you think pays for them?

I really dislike the CC industry, but so many people use these cards instead of cash, I have little choice but to take them. But for minor purchases, they're quite a burden on small businesses, who typically get the worst rates from the banks. I seethe every time I see those commercials showing how uncool cash purchasers are.

Sorry for the off-topic rant. I'll circle round by saying, had all those people in the store heeded my request, the thief might have had a bigger score. But given the economy, probably not.

15. Thank you alcina.
I haven't had to use my debit on small purchases often, but I have done it. I will now take extra care to carry a little cash for those small purchases.

:hi:

18. Good to know....
I'll remember that and pass it along. I knew that credit cards were a bust for small businesses, but I was unaware of the cost of using debit cards.

20. This is my theory about why street crime rates have fallen
Mugging someone for $40 might be a good use of time... mugging someone for 87 cents, notsomuch.

it was made prior to 1974 and the name was long. First thing that came to my mind was "Chevrolet" or maybe "Oldsmobile", yeah, that's it, it was an "Oldmobile".
