1. Is there a link to it on the page?
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 03:22 PM by MUAD_DIB
Click on it to try and download it.

On edit: Are you MAC or PC? It really shouldn't matter if the file is on the web page already.

5. try this
put your curser on the file, right click, look for "open with" click on that and pick Powerpoint.

The issue might be you don't have Powerpoint on your computer. If you do have it the process above will work.

9. Has anybody else used this file?

It could be corrupted, it could have been corrupted on archiving or opening.

Could you send me the link to the website?

7. Huh?
What is the extension on the unzipped file? If it "unzipped into MS Word" then it must be a word doc of some kind. Either that or it got named with the wrong extension (or your computers file type associations got screwed up somehow).

Can you view it in MS Word or does it look like gibberish?

4. It's either a self-extracting archive...
...in which case, all you have to do is click on it and it will open. Or, you need an unzipping utility. I've used WinZip for years, but there are many others. I'm sure you could find a free utility or you could download an evaluation copy that would be free for a couple of weeks.

What version of Word do you have?

Answer that, and I can probably help you.

12. A couple more things to try...
I know it's tough to follow a whole bunch of directions from various people but this may give you a clue what you have at least.

Try right clicking the file and look down the list of things available... Do you see one there that says Winzip, or some other form of zip (.rar) anything funky?

Is this file already downloaded onto your harddrive or is it just out on a server somewhere? If you right click and it gives you an option to download, do that and get it onto your hard drive first.

It looks like the file may not be set up as a .ppt (Powerpoint) file.

20. Okay. So it's readable in Word but it says that it's not a ppt file?
Then it may be that it's not a ppt file. Are you certain that you're downloading the correct file and that it is supposed to be a ppt file?

Is there a computer person there at work who can help you with this?

25. Then it's definitely not a PowerPoint document.
I'm not sure of the method in Office 2007. In earlier versions, you can click File*Send To*Powerpoint.

Powerpoint will convert headings that are formatted with Word styles as headings into slides, with Heading 1 being the title, and Heading 2 under that as bullet points.

26. If it's readable in Word then it is NOT a PowerPoint
presentation. It is a Word document. If it was a PP presentation then it would open in PowerPoint unless you didn't have it on your computer or don't have the PP reader on your computer.

18. This may be your best solution.
Are you at work? Who's the person everyone goes to with computer problems? Go to her or him and ask for some help. It's difficult for people who aren't physically present to see exactly what's going on and fix your problem.

let me know. 20 years in staffing haught me a few things. Not tech stuff, obviously! "Soft" skills vs. software skills, lol.

GOOD LUCK! ASK FOR THE JOB! Interview like it's the best gig in the world...because it just might be.

27. About a month and a half ago I finally found a job.
I posted about it on here and for some reason the thread caught on and and all of the congrats and K&Rs sent it to the front page.

Here I am several weeks later. They lost a contract and the most recent hire, me, was out the door.

So now I'm interviewing again. It's for a company that does internet development. My big problem is that all of my internet development knowledge is self-taught. I've been running an online business for several years and the economic downturn has made it unsustainable.

So all of my knowledge and skills as far as building and running websites is self taught seat of the pants stuff. I use mostly free tools or notepad for my development work. Employers are looking for someone who knows the (expensive) tools they use and can quickly become productive.

I don't know the tools but I *CAN* *QUICKLY* learn them. It's what I've done my whole career and my resume shows it. My problem is convincing people that my degree plus 20+ years of general non-internet IT work plus a few years of self-taught home-based web development is equal to or better than a kid just out of college who does have a few years of industry experience with the tools they use.

Do you understand my problem? Any tips etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. We could do it by PM if you prefer.
