School bus driver drunk while taking kids from school

A Mount Prospect school bus driver was nearly three times over the legal limit for alcohol after she dropped off about 50 children from an elementary school back to their homes Tuesday afternoon, police said today.

Betty Burden, 54, of the 1440 block of Park Drive, was arrested after police got a call from Vincente Ramirez, the transportation supervisor with Mount Prospect School District 57 around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Ramirez reported that a co-worker had smelled alcohol on the driver's breath, Mount Prospect police said in a press release.

The supervisor followed Burden as she dropped off children and called police when Burden's driving appeared erratic, said Assistant Cook County State's Atty. Mark Javier.

Burden had been driving the children from Lions Park Elementary School on bus No. 11, but it was empty by the time she was pulled over while traveling north on River Road, just north of Euclid Avenue, police said.

As far as "shit jobs" go, school bus driver's gotta be at least honorable mention. You've got to be a driver a disciplinarian, get in trouble if you try to do either of those jobs at the expense of the other, and of course aren't allowed to actually DO anything other than drive else you get a lawsuit, all while kids are screaming and running around and fighting. Wouldn't want my kid's bus driver to be toasted but... I can definitely see why they would be.
