Video catches backdraft that injured 4 Chicago firefighters
March 10, 2010 12:44 PM

A neighbor's video catches a backdraft engulfing Chicago firefighters.

It was one of those small fires that firefighters face every day.

But even the smallest blaze can turn on you -- as shown on a newly surfaced video of a backdraft that injured four Chicago firefighters last month.

The video, shot by a neighbor through a window, will now be used to train recruits.

The video begins shortly after Truck 33 pulled up to the boarded-up coach house on South Paulina Street on Feb. 18. Dark gray smoke is drifting from the roof and the back but no flames can be seen.

Two firefighters begin prying off a large sheet of plywood -- one of them on a ladder, the other on a porch. Suddenly they disappear in a blast of hot smoke and ash. Both stagger to the ground. One of them crawls, tries to get up, then rolls on his back.
