It's time to bombard CNN with emails and phone calls!

Because a lesbian wanted to bring her date to the prom, these bigots canceled the prom.

The news crawl on CNN is blaming...you guessed it...the LESBIAN, not the bigoted school officials.

The exact quote used is:

"School prom canceled over lesbian student"

1. How does this headline "blame" the student?
Sorry but I don't see the issue. If the headline was "School prom cancelled by bigoted School Board" that might be legally true, but it wouldn't inform the viewer about what the School Board was being bigoted about.

2. Well, since CNN can put anything they want on the crawl, why blame the VICTIM?
If they are going to mention anything at all about it, they could use two or three more words to be more clear.

What if the scenario was this:

A school in Mississippi cancels the prom because a black student wanted to take his white girlfriend as his date.

The next day CNN has on the news scrawl:

"School cancels prom because of black student".

The problem I have is that bigots sitting at home will say, "What did those queers do this time?".

3. CNN has lost it's soul to the GOP didn't you know that
they are trying to be more Fox than Fox. AND IT AIN'T WORKING. People are turning off by the droves. One butthole cable channel is enough.

8. Ain't it the truth.
I rarely have CNN on anymore because of that. I just happened to have it on this morning as I was getting dressed. I walked through the living room and BAM! - there were those nasty words staring back at me.

Those girls are already getting lots of shit for just wanting to go to the prom. CNN does not need to encourage any more harassment.

5. DUer Tempest and I worked on this a little yesterday.
We got on the "MX Safe Schools Coalition" distribution list for updates. They are coordinating offers to help the kids have their prom regardless of the outcome ACLU gets. :hi:

6. Thank you so much.
I really needed to see that! It's so good to be reminded that there are some good people out there willing to look out for victims of discrimination. It gave me chills, actually.

I was getting rather depressed this morning, as this thread was sinking fast. When I saw that crawl this morning, I just became livid beyond words.

Thanks again!

10. I loathe CNN
Edited on Sat Mar-13-10 01:33 PM by t0dd
I remember I posted an article here eight months ago about a young, undocumented Guatemalan boy that CNN did a story on. He was dying here alone because of a chronically weak heart and had no funds to pay for a transplant. He ended up being reunited with his parents after CNN aired the story.

I'm aware there are so many others with stories just like him, but CNN prematurely framed it as this sentimental story about a boy's final wish that they helped fulfill. Nevermind that had he received the proper funds, he could have been saved. But they never once mentioned where to make donations to. Not once, anywhere. It was infuriating.

15. Yeah, they suck hard.
That is an awful story. It is disgusting that a CHILD died because he was too poor to receive treatment. Yet, Dick 'Satan' Cheney, arguably the most evil man alive, is fine because of his government-funded health care.

14. Actually, I do. And quite often.
What is your problem? If you don't care, why do you feel obliged to put down others who do?

Isn't it great to have a site where GLBTers can come to feel loved and accepted?

FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

:grr:

What the fuck is wrong with some of these people? Jesus H. Christ. I think I am getting a migraine.

"I have better things to do than help people who aren't getting a fair shake in this country."
