Molly was right!! It'll be a cold day in hell before we elect another Repug president.
I really, really wish I could find the original article that she wrote about this, mainly because I hate to paraphrase genius, but I believe Molly Ivins was right on when she wrote the essay back in the dark days following the theft of the 2004 election. I was so damned depressed my husband was really beginning to worry about me when I received my "Nation" (or maybe it was "The Progressive)magazine, and there was the story that perked me right up. In her normal sunny tone, she assured all of us that even in those dark times, we needed to stay positive because the death knell was tolling for the repugs. Let me explain.

In her story, she relates how her old friend had once told her how to stop a dog from killing chickens. Everyone knew that you couldn't stop a dog from doing this once he started, but it could be done by wiring it's latest kill around it's neck, AND LEAVING IT THERE. Let it rot off the bone, but leave it there. The dog will do it's damnest to get it off, but leave it there. When it finally decomposes into nothing, the dog will never kill another chicken. "Well, dearies," she wrote "what we've done here is wire a chicken around our necks." She figured by the time Junior was done, the whole country would be so sickened by the stench of his actions, it would be a long, LONG time before we ever trusted a repug again.

So while I join you in wanting this bastard out of office badly enough to want to see him and his whole cabal of liars and thieves impeached, indicted, and imprisoned, I'm (sort of) willing to hold on and ride this out. He's managed to alienate even some of his most ardent backers. I mean, they've been dragging poor Laura out, tweaking her medications, and throwing her in front of the cameras lately. Even she's beginning to look like she wishes this whole thing was over so she can divorce the loser and get back to a normal life. Who's he got left? Ann Coulter and Dinesh D'Souza? Does Barney even pay attention to him anymore?

So, to quote our beloved (and much missed) Molly, "Cheer up, dearies." It's almost over, and with any luck, we'll never have to walk this dark road again. :toast:

1. I'm too young to know from personal experience
Edited on Mon Apr-30-07 11:46 PM by NYCALIZ
were the voters saying the same thing after Watergate?

If so, the cold day in hell was less than 30 years. And given the increasingly short attention span of our population, that cold day in hell may be as little as 6 years away.

14. More like 4 years....
Ford finished out Nixon's term...

Carter was only in one term...

The only thing that gave the regular folks a voice was that the Senate and House were controled by the Dem's....

6. No, not the same thing at all
I am definitely not too young to remember :)

Remember, after Nixon resigned, Gerald Ford took over. Ford was brought in after Spiro Agnew was forced to resign, pleading "nolo contedre" to bribery charges from his stint in Maryland. Ford was a decent man, so although he pardoned Nixon (a mistake, I think), the country wanted to put all this behind them, and Ford allowed it to do that, more or less. At least he was far from the snake Nixon was. So he voters didn't have quite the bad taste in their mouths, although they DID elect Jimmy Carter in the next election.

This time, though, I think Molly is right. Bush will NEVER resign, no matter what. And even if he did, guess who will be president? I think the 2006 told us a lot about what the country is thinking. Plus, we have a very strong field of presidential candidates. Whoever wins the primary will win the general election IF...we pay attention to the elephant in the room: voting fraud (NOT "voter fraud").

8. thank you for your experience
I'm inclined to agree that the Pardon was a terrible mistake for the country.
I think the roots of the lawlessness of Reagan/Bush may well have been nourished by the pardon.

I'm still concerned that there is little to keep the country from making the same type of error long before the cold day in hell.

How do we take control of our country back from the politicians?

16. Which is EXACTLY why we need to elect a LAW & ORDER Dem president THIS TIME
We don't need a Jimmy Carter. We need someone who is a fighter, and who will put the likes of the bush mafia behind bars, and throw away the key. Most of the mainstream candidates aren't going to do such a thing...which is PRECISELY why the mainstream keeps "laughing" about Kucinich & Gravel.

I truly believe that if Kerry had won in 2004, he would have let some kick-ass investigations proceed, and he would have made sure the Justice Department doled out some justice. So...Karl Rove stole the election...which is still a problem, since Rove's ass will REALLY be on the line this coming election.

We need someone that will do away with the facists that have taken over our government, and kick some corporate spoiled brats to the curb...starting with the VOTING MACHINE VENDORS and the MEDIA.

Two years is a long time not to expect some fuck-up from Bush and pals.

13. That could be the biggest part of it.
It isn't one scandal it's the constant daily drip, drip, drip. Always something. It is literally drumming the whole picture into the American psyche a scandal at a time. In '06 it was the congress, now it is wholly this administration. People might be less likely to forget the whole ordeal.

3. I sure hope you're correct.
But I think we HAVE to pursue IMPEACHMENT. Even so I think the rovian dream of a permanent republi-CON majority has already been permanently buried. They're going to have a "marvelous" time in 2008.

9. I know what you mean...
On one hand, I'm not sure if we've got 2 years to spare with Bozo in office. But on the other hand, you know the repugs will set up Junior as some kind of martyr pursued by evil liberals still pissed off about Clinton's impeachment. If (and it's a big, big "if") we truly had a functioning free press, it would be different. But you know they'll fall in line with the wing nuts and turn any impeachment proceedings into a "retaliation". Coulter will be on every show spewing her vitriol and lies. Dinesh D'Souza will do the same. Considering the fact that idiot rose to the bait on The Colbert Report and seriously tried to connect 9/11 to FDR should speak for itself. In fact, all of the idiots that immediately called for "Scooter's" pardon, will be lined up to tell us that it is just wrong to impeach a president during wartime. Well, at least the ones who have a "R" after their names.:sarcasm:

12. Even better (or worse), Bush tied himself around our necks using Ohio.
So, a guy who wasn't even the People's Choice in either election has done this much damage to our country.

There is a pervasive feeling that we've been wronged. And I don't think most will forget this.

15. Wronged? We've been murdered.
In Iraq. In New Orleans. Everywhere the BushCo hand is felt, there are graves. He's even filled the pet cemeteries. How many have died for inadequate medical care? Or because medicine is still too expensive? How many have died in uninspected mines? From eating a spinich salad?

Bush kills Americans.

19. I love Molly Ivins.....
I love Molly Ivins, may she rest in peace. But, I'm afraid Molly gives the American citizen too much credit. And, like many of us, she underestimates the skill of the enemy. Sleezebag Rove and the operatives will swiftboat the Democratic candidate with something entirely unexpected and devastating. They only have to say it, it doesn't need to be true. Then there is the voter suppression issue and electronic voting. I would love to think that there will be a Democrat elected to president next election. Until Democrats are as ruthless as the opposition we will be in a one sided fight. Sorry..................

20. As much as I love Molly I have to agree
Until we get past being the "United States of Amnesia", we won't be free of electing idiots and conservatives. When they say freedom isn't free, they're right. It takes a damned lot of work to get through the BS and hype to find out what's really important to know. The greatest threat to this nation has always been within our borders, and they aren't illlegal aliens.

People who fail to learn from history are indeed doomed to repeat it.
