Unbelievable lack of empathy-Video from HC Rally outside Mary Jo Kilroy (D-OH) Office:
It's Not About Health Care Reform

David Kurtz | March 17, 2010, 12:04PM
One of the ironies about Democrats, especially in Congress, being so tentative about health care reform is that the anger the reform efforts seem to have unleashed isn't really about health care reform at all.

That's not to say the anger isn't real. Take a look at this video shot by the Columbus Dispatch, of competing health care rallies yesterday outside the office of Democratic congresswoman Mary Jo Kilroy (thanks to TPM Reader JL for the link). Pay particular attention at the :50 second mark, where anti-reform protesters yell and throw a few bucks at a man holding a sign claiming he has Parkinson's.

Those guys screaming about "handouts" would be perfectly at home at a rally in the 1990s, or the 80s, or the 70s and so on. This isn't new, and it's not original. The social and cultural currents running through this debate exist independent of the debate, and the anger can't be tempered or avoided by procedural figleafs that few people inside Washington understand or by better messaging. At the end of the day, even abandoning reform won't calm that kind of anger

I know this is a couple days old but it is so indicative of the folks we are up against on the other side-cold hearted, "it's all about me" mentality. How do you counter this type of anger and lack of empathy? Forget partisanship, these people are evil.

4. If anyone ever doubts the mean-spiritedness of Republicans and
their selfishness, watch this.

IMO, this is the result of Rugged Individualism which
is the philosophy of Republican Party. When the country
changed from "looking out for each other and promoting
a common good, to Rugged Individualism", we became
a country of what's in it for me. I got mine, you get
yours and the famous--"No one is owed anything".

To hear those GOPers taunt the man with Parkinson's
with--"you work for everything you get", made my skin
crawl.

Karma has a way of coming around.

5. Karma can't come soon enough for these bastards.
I looked up on the Cols Dispatch to see if they mentioned the men's names. I was so appalled I wanted to let them know how vile they are.

6. What makes me the most sick about this is most of them will shout they are "Christians" - yea right.
They are no more Christian then the devil himself and nothing can shame them into thinking they aren't the most righteous of people.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Given at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC Thur, 3 Feb 94.

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/augustine/arch/teresa94.html

On the last day, Jesus will say to those on His right hand, "Come, enter the Kingdom. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was sick and you visited me." Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, "Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me to drink, I was sick and you did not visit me." These will ask Him, "When did we see You hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to Your help?" And Jesus will answer them, "Whatever you neglected to do unto one of these least of these, you neglected to do unto Me!"

...........

And those in that conservative crowd who didn't shout these vindictive remarks, who of them put their signs down and went the other side if they professed to be Christian's? I guess none of them did. I think it is time to call them out and tell them that they are heretics and lier's! This is one terrible "out in the open" example that goes on behind closed doors all the time. These people are to be scorned. I feel that they don't even think of others when they do this and the really terrible thing is that those that did shout the ill man down would do the same to them in a heartbeat if they find themselves or their loved ones chronically ill!

I watched Fox Business News this morning for a few minutes and there were 4 young men with their laptops in front of them talking about the Health Care Plan and all they could talk about was how much it was going to cost, not how much it would save and how many U.S. Citizens it will help. It is all about the money. They are such little minded people that they cannot see that they too will grow old, and/or might get chronically ill!

9. of course, we shouldn't construe this as a point in the current bill's favor:
Edited on Thu Mar-18-10 05:03 PM by MisterP
after all, left-wing opposition to the bill stems from the fact that it ultimately benefits the insurers--whose policies are perfectly in line with the "I don't care if you die" ideology of the right-wing opposition to the whole reform process

the bill makes us a captive market, without real benefit, for the same type of "up yours" people who are so loathsomely protesting (and who some would use to push the bill forward, "since these nasty people are against it"--regardless of the bill's actual contents)

these are the same people who worked for Enron and chortled at grannies dying from the intentional blackouts, or the brokers who collapsed the housing market: now, if the LaRouchites and Palinoids rioted and waved racist signs against TARP or Enron bailouts, would that make those bailouts good?
