Rep. Paul Broun Compares Health Care Reform To "The Great War Of Yankee Aggression"
Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) is a fanatical opponent of health care reform, who has suggested that President Obama might "declare martial law" and rule as a dictator. In recent days, the right-wing congressman has made Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) the target of his fury, calling her arrogant, ignorant, and incompetent. Last night on the House floor, Broun continued his streak of combative statements by comparing health care reform to the American Civil War, which he called "The Great War of Yankee Aggression."

BROUN: If ObamaCare passes, that free insurance card that's in people's pockets is gonna be as worthless as a Confederate dollar after the War Between The States -- the Great War of Yankee Aggression.

1. Was he talking about that treasonous attempt to destroy the
United States back in the 19th Century?

Really... no one I live and work around ever mentions the so-called "war of Northern aggression" unless we're having a discussion about The Beverly Hillbillies, which probably hasn't happened since 1973.

Broun is from Georgia, and unless Cousin-Fuckers Monthly runs a photo spread, I doubt that he's ever posed nude.

14. Oh - thought it was a misspelling.
But, the fact that I don't know who this person is and I live one state away confirms that we don't talk about this 99 percent of the time.

:hi:

Thanks for letting me know it's another "Scott Braun". But... geez... who the hell is this guy?

12. I was on vacation recently on a tour of a US military memorial site and
the guide mentioned the "after the civil war ended" and, of course, the guy from Tennessee said "Down south we don't think it has ever ended." Hardy har-har... My parents live in TN.

The ancedotal guy you heard - was just ONE person.

Most of us don't talk about the Civil War.... EVER.

19. I mentioned that my parents live in Tipton County, TN,
my husband grew up in Lynchburg, VA (his whole fam still lives there) and I grew up in Bluefield, WV (technically WV broke away but the sentiment is still strong in southern WV). I have more than ONE anecdote. Let's see, in high school (in 1997) I was greeted by a guy who I was in the band with and who was pissed that I was talking to a black student in English class. He drew a confederate flag on his notebook and flashed it to me -- it read "the south will rise again." I have many more if you like.

21. I can keep up with anecdotes, if you like, but the proof of the
pudding is in the tasting... and... JUST LIKE MOST NORTHERN STATES, people in CITIES in the South vote for Democrats.

The difference is that the cities in the North are bigger, for the most part (with the exceptions of Atlanta and Memphis, which, by the way, are also Democratic strong-holds... so is Nashville, the CITY of Knoxville, TN - the county of Knox is decidedly NOT, which makes my blue city look red on any county map).

I grew up in Knoxville, hon... and I see far less racism here than in many Northern states.

The South Will Rise Again mentality is sadly in evidence here. I don't know why some want to be in denial about it.

34. Only among the rednecks. Unfortunately, they are quite loud.
But they are slowly dying off, since they have a tendency to kill themselves off. What's a rednecks last words?

"Hey ya'll, watch this! Here, hold my beer."

13. Speak for yourself...
...Come to Mobile where the war only ended in some regards, where every April is Confederate History Month, where a statue of one of the town's most exalted figures (unrepentant Confederate Admiral Raphael Semmes) sits on a pedestal at the foot of the city's grand boulevard.

25. That's garbage
I've lived in the Boston area, New Orleans, and western Arkansas. While there are racists in all three places, the racism is more virulent and more open down South.

32. The Southern Poverty Law Center...
...can even verify that Klan membership in Boston is greater per capita than most southern cities, including Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA.

Boston is INFAMOUS for its history of racism and segregation.

Fact: The LAST team in MLB to integrate was the Boston Red Sox. Their racist owner was a pure Boston POS. So fuck the Red Sox. I am proud to be a Dodgers fan, the FIRST to integrate in the modern era.
