I hope everybody knows we need to defend Stupak

The anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List group announced tonight they will strip Rep. Bart Stupak of the "Defender of Life" award that he's received several times. The group blasted Stupak's role in forging a compromise with the White House on abortion language in an executive order and said he is no longer truly "pro-life."

The group says President Obama's executive order was "unacceptable" and they are redoubling efforts to elect "true" pro-life candidates.

SBA List Candidate Fund President Marjorie Dannenfelser issued a statement saying the group had been planning to honor Stupak (D-MI) for his efforts at their Campaign for Life Gala scheduled for Wednesday. "We will no longer be doing so. By accepting this deal from the most pro-abortion President in American history, Stupak has not only failed to stand strong for unborn children, but also for his constituents and pro-life voters across the country," Dannenfelser said in the statement.

Women's groups criticized Obama for the order as well.

The SBA List statement said lawmakers who vote for the health care bill "can no longer call themselves 'pro-life.'"

There is NO WAY in Hell that we can let them use him as an example "Of what will happen if you vote with them".

I'm calling it the "Stupak Line"

Even though he's a pain in the pro-life ass. He's OUR pain! NOT theirs.

I'm supporting the pro-life Dems that voted YES 100%

59. How solid is the primary opponent?
I haven't been able to find sources where Connie Saltonstall has expressed her posiiton on issues such as NAFTA, Iraq/Afghanistan, the Assault Weapons Ban, Michigan's 2004 ballot initiative which banned gay marriage in the state and the Hyde Amendment. She seems to accept the Hyde Amendement becasue of this statement in her campaign website:

"No federal funds have been used for abortions since 1977, and that provision will stay in effect without his amendment."

31. Tough shit. He's been kowtowing to the right
for awhile now, he brought this totally on himself. He made his bed, he can fucking lie in it. And his "change" had nothing to do with his "standing up for his principles", it had to do with him recognizing how angry even many of his allies and many in his party are with him and realizing he had to do some damage control. Again, he made his fucking bed, he can damn well lie in it.

I'll give you one thing, you do show courage by posting this here.

He gets none of my pats on the back. He's an ass, and an arrogant one, and if he ends up being squeezed by both sides, well, all for the good, I say.

As I said elsewhere, my tent isn't big enough to hold anti-choice zealots.

65. At what cost?
The right wooed the religious into their camp to conglomerate their power and while it has worked, look at what it has created? Unquestioning loyalty based on hypocritical family values and holier-than-thou conservatism. The right uses their constituents religion to get them to vote against their own interests every time. And the monster they've created we can see now in the Palins and the Teabaggers.

You'd be a fool to sell out the major part of your base just to try bring in a demographic that would rather eat glass than vote for anyone with a (D) by their name.

Stupak voted against NAFTA.

Stupack voted against the IWR.

Stupack voted for the non-binding resolution disapproving of Bush's plan for the surge in Iraq.

Stupak voted for Kucinich's bill to end the war in Afghanistan.

Stupack was endorsed by the following unions in 2008:

International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 324
Michigan State AFL-CIO
Michigan Teamsters Joint Council No. 43
National Association of Social Workers
National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU)
Service Employees International Union (SEIU)
United Auto Workers (UAW)

Progressive Punch rates Stupak as "acceptable".

The National Journal rates Stupak as left of center.

The American Conservative Union gives Stupak a very low score.

Stupak's primary challenger, Connie Saltonstall, has expressed doubts she can defeat the Republican nominee this fall.

The President of NOW has said replacing Stupak with a Republican doesn't do anyone any good.
