I think I know why the Repubs love the abortion issue...
It gives them what they see as the moral high ground. Battered by accusations that they are racist who want to exterminate poor people, they have grabbed this issue and clung tenaciously to it for that reason as well as the fact that it costs them nothing. Once the baby is born, well, she is on her own. Personal responsibility, doncha know?

1. Republican logic: Force women to have babies but don't provide them with healthcare for their
pregnancy and don't give the kids healthcare after they are born.

2. Repukes like the abortion issue because the religious right likes the issue.
Edited on Mon Mar-22-10 05:49 PM by LostInAnomie
Not because they actually care about the issue or the morality involved, but because the RR will turn out to vote on it.

If there wasn't a huge block of reliable voters attached to the issue we would never hear about it.

3. They don't give a damn about babies.
It's always been about keeping us girls in our place.

4. Exploiting poor people, slaves, serfs, peasants; whatever they
were called has never changed. Assuring they are burdened by children enhances the ability for the ruling class to do that. They aren't concerned by killing any other time so we know they don't really care about anyones fetus. At least not the right-wingers pulling the strings.
People that believe everything they are taught in church or on Fox News probably won't figure that out.

12. it's an issue to rally around without actually doing anything
If they were really serious about outlawing abortion they could have done something when they controlled both houses of Congress and the presidency. But that would mean they'd lose their big wedge issue and might have to run on something besides emotions.

16. Better than that
for most it's an issue to rally around that has absolutely no impact on their own lives.

Watch all the men proudly proclaiming their everlasting love for all fetuses...

It's easy: they get to appear righteous and no fear that it would require any sacrifice on their own part to do it.

7. There are some true believers
The country club republicans don't really have much in common with the walmart republicans, but they need their votes to get elected, so they pander to them. If the republican leaders really wanted to do anything about abortion, they could have done it during the bush years when they had the majority in congress and the white house, but they didn't. Because they don't really want to do anything about it, because if they did they wouldn't have that boogie man to dangle in front of the holy-roller division of the walmart republicans. As long as they can dangle it out there, they have that group of votes locked up.

9. Exactly
It keeps the crazed religious right coming to the polls and voting against their own self interest.

8. A repuke once told me this scary thought
He said he was anti abortion, which is his right under the constitution but if the n*** women went in to have abortions, that was ok. Thinning the herd and shit like that. I told him to get away from me. Immediately. He did.

10. FREEDOM!
Freedom for all! Our Founding Fathers wanted us to be Free! Tax-free! Tyrant-free! Thought-free!!

Repubs cry all day and night about how precious our freedoms are, yet when it comes to the most difficult and personal choice a woman can make, that freedom is no longer applicable. Suddenly, it's totally fine for the government to intrude and dictate when and if a woman can terminate her pregnancy. Suddenly the government can make moral choices for its citizens and this is fine, but a 5% tax hike on the richest among us is a call for armed revolt.

Hell, in some of their warped minds, they are against even using birth control to avoid getting pregnant in the first place.

Yes, this is a win-win for Republicans, so long as enough Americans are "pro-life", whatever that term even means. The Repub does nothing (it's not like Roe v Wade will ever be overturned) and they are guaranteed 30% of the vote at least, depending on the district.

You are exactly right.

15. There's a Link to Sick Sexuality also
The white male anti-choice zealot believes that women who have abortions are sluts.

Sluts that would never sleep with them even if they paid for it.

They want control of those loose vaginas.

18. does anyone here
get pissed off when people compare abortion to slavery. Most of the slave states have a more anti-choice attitudes and most of the states that had banned slavery by 1800 (NY, MA, CT) are more pro-choice.

19. The GOP loves the abortion issue so much they did nothing to stop
the problem when they had a supermajority in 2004.
