Ann Coulter’s speech in Ottawa cancelled

Organizers have cancelled a University of Ottawa speech by right-wing American pundit Ann Coulter after deciding it wasn't safe to hold the event.

The move followed boisterous demonstrations outside that some sponsors of the appearance feared could turn violent.

“There was a risk there could be physical violence,” said Canadian conservative activist Ezra Levant, who was scheduled to introduce Ms. Coulter.

Authorities evacuated the University of Ottawa building where Ms. Coulter was due to speak after someone triggered a fire alarm.

The evacuation took place as throngs of anti-Coulter demonstrators yelled for her to leave.

“No more hate speech on our campus,” demonstrators chanted.

at least according to the rightwingers I know, who told me when rightwing radio stations refused to play the Dixie Chicks music, that this was how things work in a democracy. It was free speech at work. If enough people speak out and demand action, that is Democracy working .....

She will try to use it against Canada, always a good target for the infantile, morons on the right, but in the current atmosphere she will be limited to the violent tea-bagger audience. Not one Republican I know wants to be associated with these people.

Fox Nation is reporting that Ann Coulter's hate mongering could get her into more than just the headlines in Canada.

A letter from the University of Ottawa where, apparently, Coulter is scheduled to speak tomorrow, states:

We are, of course, always delighted to welcome speakers on our campus and hope that they will contribute positively to the meaningful exchange of ideas that is the hallmark of a great university campus. We have a great respect for freedom of expression in Canada, as well as on our campus, and view it as a fundamental freedom, as recognized by our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The crowd was upholding the Rethug tradition of being out attended by the porta-potties. Maybe the real reason why that fire alarm was pulled was because attendance was so poor.

I thought it was odd that it was canceled just because of a demonstration. She may have realized she was going to be boo'ed out of town (and possibly even arrested if she didn't watch her mouth a bit) and positioned herself as a martyr to save face.

I walk through the University of Ottawa campus to get home from work; I saw the crowd, and it looked like all the other lefty crowds I've protested with in this city, and I've never seen any violence. We're Canadian pacifists, for fuck's sake.

I happen to actually agree with Levant about our hate speech laws - I'm not in favour of this type of restriction on free expression. But I still call bullshit on the stunt.
