Obama signs a bill that allows guns into National Parks last month....
so this means the wingnuts will gather with their guns in the parks next month to protest...what exactly? Their rights being stripped away by the Obama's administration? Does anyone else see the sad irony in this?

1. I have a wingnut friend that insists it's Obama's mission to take away everyone's guns
I keep asking him what Obama has proposed along those lines, and the answer is always something like, "well, nothing yet, but he's going to!"

You would think he's a valuable tool for the ReThugs, since he can read Obama's mind.

take away any of his guns while Obama is Pres.

15. I have already proposed that wager
Strangely, he didn't want to take me up on it.

I'm waiting for this summer. In February of '09, he gave me a lengthy lecture on the evils of Obama. In particular, he was concerned about "...how anti-Constitution he is." When I asked him where his outrage on the very subject was during the previous 8 years, he replied, "It's pointless to be obsessed about the past."

Anyway, he told me that if we still had our civil liberties in a year and a half, he would be the first to admit he was wrong.

Wanna make a bet on that one?

14. Best thing you can do is cite the signing of the new Nat'l Parks/Gun law.

For what it's worth, I'm a long-time gun owner, and I'm quite comfortable with the President's stance on gun control. I'm NOT comfortable with the NRA's crazy right wing political attitude. (They were once a moderate sportsman's assoc and I used to be a member.)

2. There won't be any more guns in parks than before...they'll just be more visible.

4. but that's not the point....
gun owners have more rights now than they did at the beginning of this year due to a bill that Obama signed and yet there are still gun owners out there that are convinced that Obama wants to strip them of their rights.

The protests that gather at national parks will do so legally (assuming they all have permits) thanks to the very President they're protesting.

8. And most of them have received tax cuts in the last year
but that doesn't sway them from their own, alternate view of reality.

3. It's primarily racism
Trust me, there will be no gun control under Obama. Even if he wanted to do it will simply never happen.

There was a small window in which you could have passed strict gun control in this country. That time has since long passed. One good thing Obama has done is kept the anti-gun wing of the party at bay because there are many people who share our views on economics but who favor guns. Taking gun control off the table as the issue was the best thing to happen to the Democratic Party in this country.

Democrats are still labeled as anti-gun.

6. Yeah but our majority in both houses
Edited on Wed Mar-24-10 11:25 AM by terrell9584
Exists solely because of pro-gun Democrats that we've elected in the South, Mountain States and Midwest.

In fact, it's not possible for us to have that majority without them.

7. So what? If X is a bad thing, Democrats (and liberals/leftists in general) get labeled as X, period.
At least, by actually not being anti-gun, they do get some votes from pro-gun people who are not batshit crazy. Those still exist.

10. I've witnessed that personally.
Having been born and raised in the midwest, just about every male family member of mine and my male friends from back home are hunters or at least like to shoot targets. For awhile there they were getting a little worried and starting to wonder if the Dems really did want to take their guns away. Some of them wouldn't vote Dem for that reason alone, even though they weren't very political and even worked in unions, etc. None of them are crazy militia types at all, just hunters and gun collectors. (For example, one collects antique muzzle-loaders, etc.) Most of them have seen what the GOP is doing to this country and are now voting Dem, but start up that gun grabbing crap again and they'll run away like frightened rabbits. I very much hope we can put leave the gun issue lie where it is....some modest restrictions and that's it.

12. Based on his past stances on guns, his campaign promises, and some comments by his people

there is no reason to think that his view on the 2nd Amendment and gun owner rights has changed.

He's just not acting consistent with past votes and rhetoric. Which I'm happy about.

But until our President actually says something like "No new federal gun bans" or better yet, "I'm signing executive orders removing all current federal laws that keep guns out of the hands of law abiding and otherwise non-prohibited residents", then I'll assume his stance is the same that he would like to reduce civilian access to firearms.

The Carry in National Parks bill was an add-on to another bill that he wanted to sign.
