My instructer calls herself independent, but the talking points still sneak in...
She is a smart woman...that's what makes this exasperating. We were discussing HCR and all that goes with it. The student loan reform she must've picked up right off of Faux. She said that it would raise our interest rates. I asked how does it do that when banks are taken out of the equation. She couldn't answer that. The biggie, which did piss me off, is her assertion that HCR is bad because we'll pay for people too lazy to buy their own health care insurance and that want the government to do everything for them. I replied that we already pay for lazy people. We also pay for vets, old people, poor people, unemployed people and so on. This is one way of dealing with that problem. Then she said the government had no business getting into health care. I replied that the private industry had every chance to regulate themselves and they didn't. While this isn't ideal regulation, it is a start and has some teeth. She's lamented in our classroom at how her insurance company had forced her college-age daughter off their policy.

I don't mind her not supporting this particular bill (law now). There are some valid concerns and I share those, too. I've always respected her because she is intelligent and knows her stuff. I'm taking medical coding and billing, BTW. This legislation will have a huge impact on our future careers.

I was very surprised at how many talking points seeped into the discussion. She voted for Nader, too.

It was a good discussion, but I'm a bit disappointed that she was throwing out the standard repuke talking points.

You may need to revise your estimate of her intelligence.

8. Why it's the DLC's very own arbiter of DLC perception management of history-there was never a coup
everything is the fault of Ralph Nader.

4. That she voted for Nader against President Obama didn't tip you off?
I know a lot of smart(read educated), people who don't have a lick of common sense.

Good at books but when it comes to real life issues they are dumber than a bag of hammers.

5. "Independent". That is what Republicans often call themselves
now. At least the ones that realize how bad the previous 8 years of criminals and perverts we had running things really were. I wouldn't want to admit having voted for Bush twice either. At least some percentage of them realize on some level how bad they screwed up. That won't stop them from doing it again though.

6. For years I couldn't find one person who admitted to voting for Nixon after he resigned

They all claimed to be Independents.

My own Republican parents even stopped voting in the primaries so they didn't have to admit their party affiliation.

10. I'm glad to say I subverted my mother before the 72 election -
she voted Nixon in 68, but McCarthy in 72 (for what good it did). She's been a solid Dem ever since.

7. Ridiculouss that she said it would raise interest rates. Rates are low
because the Gov't was subsidizing the private lenders. No reason for the Gov't to take that part over and all of a sudden charge a new higher rate. Complete crap.

11. Many people who now claim to be independent
are actually ashamed to admit they are repugs.
Sort of in the closet, so to speak.
