What is a "reactionary progressive?" Insight into the mind of a Gamer & Rethug
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 10:10 AM by Homer12
Some right-wing shill on a message forum, after our forum was locked, accused me of being a "reactionary progressive with a persecution complex", here's a sample. He was smart enough to use private messages so he would not get band from the site. GW by the way, is a term for the game company Games Workshop, known for their shitty and unethical business practices. This was the genesis of the argument, which quickly turned into a personal attack against me using his brand of Psychology 101, personal attacks, and Insults.

My Post: Phryxis,

I originally was going to send a private message and apologize for being a Jerk in the original posts. I really don't want to make enemies, you obviously have a different approach and want to make them. Considering I am pathological, you being the expert know how easy it is for people like us to make and create enemies.

You never answered any of my original questions from my last forum post. I would really like to know what you have to say. Most of all I would want to know what your Vested Interest are in 1)Defending GW and 2) Personally Attacking me?

His Reply:
My Question: 1)Defending GW

His Reply: I have no vested interest in defending GW. If you review my posts on Dakka, you'll find that I take a variety of positions on GW. On some issues I am tremendously dissatisfied with them. Their neglectful treatment of the Orks is an example of this. On other issues I will defend them. For example, when I think you're being an abusive and unreasonable customer to them. Generally speaking, I try to err on the side of positivity when it comes to GW. I have spent a lot of time and money on their hobby, and I fail to see any benefit in clawing and scratching for every negative I can find with them.

But, this really isn't the issue, as I've tried to explain to you several times already. I have no problem at all with people who don't like GW, provided they have a valid reason or argument for their opinion. I think you have demonstrated, pretty conclusively, that your complaints don't really originate with GW, but instead with your exaggerated perceptions of politically motivated malfeasance in everything you observe.

When you called me a "shiller" (and, BTW, you mean "shill" I told you that this was a defense mechanism. You conflated that with "being defensive" which is not the same thing. A defense mechanism is a reflexive mental construct that people use, without thinking, to protect their worldview. You've decided you have a legitimate gripe with GW, so the only way somebody could disagree is if they work for GW. That's a defense mechanism. It's also the exact sort of categorical ad homonym attack that you seem to think is the sole purview of people like Hannity and Limbaugh...

My Question: 2) Personally Attacking me?

His Reply: It's really not about attacking you. I don't want to hurt your feelings, or cause you discomfort... That's not my goal. What I want, is for you to keep saying hilarious stuff, and if you take the goading personally, so be it. I'm not trying to hurt you, I'm not trying to look out for you. I'm just trying to get you to keep being hilarious.

I'm actually a bit of a connoisseur of crazy internet "progressives." I actually had no idea that you were one when I first responded to you, it was just a pleasant surprise, but it is one reason I've kept trying to get you to say humorous things. Nothing gives me a laugh quite like the Pavlovian response that people like you have to words like "Diebold."

My Question: What I find true is your obsessiveness trying to find a way to convince me. Why do you need to convince me? Why is it so important?

Have you ever heard somebody say "I feel like I'm talking to myself here..." That's about what's going on. I'm basically just observing the way your mind works (or fails to work), and commenting on it. It's as much a form of sociological note taking as it is actually talking to you. I know you're not listening. People like you get by on tuning out or discrediting things that don't fit your worldview.

There's also a certain humor to be derived from watching somebody fail to grasp a clear explanation. A tragic sort of humor, but worth it nonetheless. I mean, you realize I'm going to copy and paste this so my friends can laugh at it too, right?

My Statement: I can also agree that as far as all your personal attacks go, which you admit to just now, make you a great person to be friends with.

Do you have a lot of friends who you consider delusional, abusive and totally incapable of introspection? It's not like I'm trashing some great friendship here, guy. We weren't ever going to be friends.

My Question: Are you a conservative?

His Answer: First tell me what you think the word means.

Are you a conservative?

Sure.
=================================================

As you can see he has a hard time answering any of my questions directly without, always putting his own brand of insults and spin even with a direct question asked of him? Shows a complete un-willingness to expose himself, because answering the question might kill his entire attempt to destroy me; he might even have to question his motives for being a bully?

I'm just trying to grasp why a person would act like this, because whatever my faults maybe, his hypocrisy and out-right incivility is rather disturbing.

So what does everyone else think?

1. They pal around with the "secular fundamentalists".
Even blatant, direct contradiction goes right over these people's heads.

3. Games Workshop

They make a pretty good miniatures 3D tabletop war game, which I have spent and invested in.

Yet, I have a problem with the quality of their business practices, including false advertisement, constant price increase, quality of their the magazine, the way they treat independent retailers, etc.... Which I have a problem with. The second I mentioned politics and my displeasure with BUSH, he went nuts.

Obviously, none of this could be gleaned from the above since it was a personal attack on me. I have no other reason to think he was not a frothing conservative, considering the viscousness of his attack upon me, and his spinned non-committal answers.

Carl Rove would be proud.
