Condemned killer hoarded 30 anti-depressants for suicide attempt

The condemned killer who attempted suicide eight days before his execution took about 30 tablets of an anti-depressant medication prescribed for him, an investigation has concluded.

Lawrence Reynolds, 43, most likely "cheeked the pills and then stockpiled them to use later in his suicide attempt," said a report by an Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction investigator.

Reynolds survived the March 7 suicide attempt, but was executed by lethal injection on March 16 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville.

The report said he told a fellow inmate, "I'm going to show them. I've got something for them."

He told another inmate, apparently referring to his pending execution, that he was "not going to go out like that."

1. I'm not exactly sure I would want to go by anti-depressant overdose...
Depending on the type, I think some severe Liver/kidney pain would result before any possible loss of consciousness. Just a guess.

2. Tricyclic Antidepressants are very toxic they often cause serious arrhythmia's.
They can also cause neurological problems.

3. I think you're thinking of monoamine oxidase inhibitors
Old school.

Tricyclics actually carry a risk of hypotention.

4. Nope. I'm talking about TCA's.
Tricyclic antidepressant overdose is caused by excessive use or overdose of a tricyclic antidepressant drug. It is a significant cause of fatal drug poisoning. The severe morbidity and mortality associated with these drugs is well documented due to their cardiovascular and neurological toxicity. Additionally, it is a serious problem in the pediatric population due to their potential toxicity<1> and the availability of these in the home when prescribed for bed wetting and depression.
