Twitter threats against Barack Obama over health reforms
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 11:38 AM by maddezmom
***sorry if this is a dupe but just ran across this and it was news to me.****

The US Secret Service is investigating two assassination threats levelled at the President via Twitter.

"We are aware of the comments and are taking the appropriate investigative action," a representative said.

"We respect the right of free speech, but in such instances we have a right and an obligation to ask questions and determine intent."

As the House debated the Bill, one Twitter user who claimed he was a black American wrote: "America, we survived the assassinations and Lincoln & Kennedy. We'll surely get over a bullet to Barack Obama's head.

"The next American with a Clear Shot should drop Obama like a bad habit . . . Turn on Barack Obama."

1. This should be taken VERY seriously!
In light of how the latest flash mobs in Philly are using Twitter to stay ahead of the police, gang up on random people to beat them, etc. Twitter has become a more effective means of communicating from any phone you can text from.

It's not Twitter's fault of course but they can be used as a conduit for some pretty bad shit (or good, as in the case of Iran's uprising)

3. Yes, but like any public forum, Twitter can ban users who use it for criminal purposes..nt

5. As much as I hated Bush, I never wanted him dead.
Maybe he has Cheney to thank for that.

6. They need to start prosecuting the threats, which are illegal
whether or not the person has intent to follow through, IIRC.

7. I think all these brave warriors on the internet will find that bravado has a way of disappearing
when you're face to face with a federal agent.

9. But, but I heared over at Freeperland that tweets were untraceable!!!!!
They're too short - like hanging up before a minute during a crank call.

Freaking Luddites. No clue and they missed the whole abrogation of civil rights under BushCo* and continued with the renewal of the unpatriot act.

I'm imagining our society with all these horrible, nasty, evil and mean people locked up because they didn't have the sense to freak when BushCo* wiped their asses with the Constitution, but have no clue of the actual implications and the fact that the same programs are still running.
