We have both been part of the conservative movement for, as mentioned, the better part of half of our lives. And I can categorically state I've never seen such a hostile environment towards free thought and debate -- once the hallmarks of Reaganism, the politics with which we grew up -- prevail in our movement as it does today. The thuggish demagoguery of the Limbaughs and Becks is a trait we once derided in the old socialist Left. Well boys, take a look in the mirror. It is us now.

4. Reagan empowered the Limbaughs and Beck and gave power to the Christian theocrats.
Reagan is the one you should blame, not the seeds he sowed.

By way of his popularity he legitimized the factional divisiveness, the willful ignorance and the beggar thy neighbor free market ideology that are destroying us now.

9. Her statement is meant for fellow republicans
not for liberals. I think she's trying to get others to support their effort to stand up against the violence and tactics of Beck and Limbaugh. For that we should be thankful.

Even though you're right.

37. Yes. Her stepfather is Peter Worthington, former editor of the Toronto Sun.
Worthington is/was a noted conservative, and was actually charged under Canada's official secrets act for publishing the names of Canadians who were recruited by the KGB back in the 70's. Charges were eventually dropped.

12. Reagan began this.
That was the era when the GOP began actively organizing the lunatics into a voting block, and Reaganites very happily exploited that base's racism, xenophobia, and fear to get their way politically. They were the ones who decided to grab the tiger's tail. The tiger's loose now, but the Reagan crew let it out of it's cage.

Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 02:00 PM by Guy Whitey Corngood
"I have in my hand 57 cases of individuals who would appear to be either card carrying members or certainly loyal to the Communist Party, but who nevertheless are still helping to shape our foreign policy...."

On edit my mistake. Popy Bush not reagan.

It was, by Canadian standards, the most contentious political argument I've ever seen. And it was the left that was painting it as "armageddon".

25. The very definition of conservatism precludes 'free thought'.
The hallmark of conservatism is opposition to change, and in the case of modern American conservatives, who are actually reactionaries, they want to roll back changes already in place, like Medicare and Social Security and minimum wage laws. Conservatives would simply oppose new changes, like new social spending programs. The current reactionaries obviously oppose that too, but the majority also every other progressive reform since the Enlightenment, including democracy, women's rights, abolition of slavery, government food safety programs, etc.

29. Raygun frequenty called the portly drug addict a "great American"
Raygun most certainly didn't give a shit about meaningful debate. Frankly the guy was only capable of delivering one liners written by his speechwriters. If you ever watched his election debates, they were full of hyperbole and bullshit. As a trained actor, Raygun had the ability to deliver hyperbole and bullshit and at least appear as if he believed it strongly himself. That's not free thought and debate. That's simply a snake oil salesman that's better at his craft than most.

That being said, I agree completely with the rest of Ms. Frum's comments. However, I think she was aiming them more towards the Limbaughs and Becks of the world and the reality is that type of mentality is firmly embedded into those GOPhers that fill the halls of congress, so it's not the Limbaughs and the Becks that are the biggest part of the problem.

32. Reagan was a fraud. The Heritage Foundation is a right wing extremist sewer...
Knowledge is power, but distortions, lies and propaganda from the Heritage think tank full of floating turds of right wingers is not a source for knowledge, truth or facts. But you are free to go there to read skewed numbers, distorted information and outright lies. Oh yeah, and you can listen to lots of 'gosh golly' clips from Ronnie Reagan, the same president who sent our soldiers to Lebanon and because he restricted them with tight orders of engagement 241 of them were murdered in their sleep by suicide truck bombers. Then Reagan cut and ran within two weeks pulling out every soldier in the area. And Reagan is the same president who increased our national debt 400%. Reagan also gutted funding to regulatory agencies and set up the savings and loan scandal which cost the American taxpayer almost a trillion dollars. Reagan also never once proposed a balanced budget, but he claimed to be fiscally conservative. Reagan also never once vetoed an appropriations bill. Reagan also gave weapons and money to terrorists to free the hostages held by the Iranians.

Yeah, you can go to the Heritage website and you can even spam it all over trying to dupe the unsuspecting right winger into actually taking your bait. But any educated, reasonable and intelligent person knows the Heritage organization is just a think tank filled with neocons and other right wing cowards, none of whom have served in the military, but whom all love to go to war.

Knowledge is power, but right wingers are terrified of knowledge. That's why they attack teachers, professors, universities, scientists and anyone else with intelligence. They even attack science itself, just as they did in the dark ages when the right wingers of that day thought the earth was flat.
