Bush: "Even if you thought it was a mistake to go into Iraq...far greater mistake to pull out now''

http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/news_theswamp/2007/05/white_houe_ther.html#more

<snip>

"It's a tough fight,'' Bush said of the war in Iraq this morning in a speech to general contractors in Washington. "It's been a difficult year for the American people, and I understand that…. Even if you thought it was a mistake to go into Iraq,'' Bush said, "it would be a far greater mistake to pull out now.''

...

The president insists that the violence underway in Iraq is "a systematic attack on an entire nation,'' as opposed the civil war that many have called it. The question for the U.S., the president said, is not taking sides in a civil war, but continuing to fight the same enemy that attacked the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001. "I strongly believe it's in our international interests to stay in the fight,'' he said to applause from the contractors.

3. This is what I hear all the time from people..."I know it was a
mistake to go there but if we leave, there will be a bloodbath".

We need to educate these people that American forces can leave and be replaced with an international peace keeping force, but in order to do that we have to exercise some diplomacy, a concept that the Bush Administration abhors. And we have to get the factions fighting in Iraq to sit down with eachother...something they won't do as long as we are there.

There needs to be more discussion of this in Congress and on the street! The people who feel this way are well meaning people who have just swallowed the Bush line. We have to show them that there is a way out of Iraq without a bloodletting.

7. I doubt any peace keeping force is coming
Sure maybe 3-4 years ago you could have gotten a peace keeping force in. No one wants to touch this thing anymore.

16. I don't think we'll see an international force anytime soon.
Iraq is our nightmare and the rest of the world is not that amenable to bailing us out. Especially since shrub and his cronies spent so much time insulting and bullying them everytime they offered a compromise. I'm afraid the world community will simply tell us to FOAD and honestly, who can blame them?

I'm afraid we haven't seen the end of the bloodshed in Iraq no matter what we do, it's not going to get any better for a long long time. I can only hope that there isn't a new Taliban government in place that we will have to get rid of in 10 years.

4. Official spin--NOT a civil war. The Sunnis and Shia are best buddies,
who need our help to rid their nation of Al Qaeda and other foreign fighters. A worthy cause once again--we're fighting the perpetrators of 9/11! Thank God Al Qaeda poured into Iraq to give us a real enemy to fight, instead of just those pesky "insurgents". Wonder how many will buy this bullshit.

5. He doesn't even understand this war
I sure hope he's trying to lie in those statements. I'd hate to think 4+ years into this thing he is so stupid that he still doesn't grasp what he's fighting over there.

rubbing their palms together over the prospect of some big ass government assignments.

10. Oh boy! So Bush is saying "I sucked you bastards into this war, I forced you to sacrifice
...blood and treasure, I used lies and deceit to keep us there way longer than necessary, I endangered our country's long term security, our constitutional democracy and our general economic welfare. Now if we pull out of this war I'll look bad and that's not acceptable because I'll look like a failure!"

Tough shit shrub*, you have been a disastrous president and it's time for you to get out of the way. Retract the veto or we impeach.

14. He is right. There will be a bloodbath -- whether we leave or not.
What we need is an international force that replaces our troops in Iraq and is much larger than the contingent we put in there.

Of course, that would mean that our oil companies would not be able to enforce agreements regarding their takeover of the Iraq oil resources -- which would mean we would have to start getting serious very fast about developing and using alternative energy resources. And there's the real rub. Bush would have to snub his nose at his core supporters from the oil industry. That's what really scares him.

We aren't achieving anything in Iraq. The real problem is in Afghanistan -- and Pakistan from what I can tell.
