New Yorkers told to 'pull their pants up'

Mr Adams is calling for the end of the sagging trend that has become popular in men's fashion. In an online message posted on YouTube, he said: "You can raise your level of respect if you raise your pants", while pleading to young people not to "surrender control over your own image".

The politician, a retired police captain, is the latest to speak out on the trend. He follows Larry Platt, an American Idol performer who became an internet sensation earlier this year with his song "Pants on the Ground". Even Barack Obama has previously said: "Some people might not want to see your underwear. I'm one of them."

5. yeah, but this fad has lasted long enough
IMO

It looks stupid, and aside from providing added comedic value to videos of police chases, I don't get the point (ever seen episodes of those shows on TruTV where the suspect gets caught because he can't run with his pants around his knees?).

Seems like this fad has been around forever and it's really way past time for it to die.

Confession: my pants do occasionally sag, but that's because I'm losing weight and it's too much trouble to add yet another hole to my belt. I never let it go far before I pull them back up, where they stay for another 5 minutes or so.<\i>

9. I have heard that it started because in jail, the prisoners had
their belts confiscated. If the people who emulate this look admire prisoners, they are fools. I, too, hope this fad goes away.

64. No. It started in prison, has nothing to do with sex. Prisons provide oversized clothes, pants.
This had always been my suspicion (having taught in a juvenile hall for 4 years), and this snopes article seems to confirm my suspicion.

and countless millions of others out on parole, you've got quite a lot of models dictating this particular fashion statement.

Everything eventually goes out of fashion. Even the prison industry, as we know it today, will.

33. This fad must have originated as a psychology experiment
One psychologist made a friendly wager to another that he could pick the dumbest, asinine idea and get people to follow it, if enough of an effort was made to present it as either hip or popular. The other took him up on it, believing that members of society weren't such sheep that they'd blindly embrace something that obviously made them appear as foolish, ignorant imbeciles. Guess which one won the bet?

Edited on Sat Apr-03-10 04:09 PM by Cronus Protagonist
Just because this kind of cleavage isn't to your taste doesn't mean it should be banned. If you want this to end, you should, if you're being consistent, also want women to stop showing cleavage. And these boyz ain't even showing any skin anyway.

I'm looking forward to the future when guys wear pants with little holes where the nuts go, so we can see their cleavage in the front like women do with their tits and have done for thousands of years.

52. oh bullshit
Women don't show their cleavage by shoving their shirts down below their breasts looking like they haven't completed dressing. The clothes that show off women's attributes are cut to fit. Women would NEVER shove their pants down beneath their butts showing off a pair of granny panties when the pants are cut to fit otherwise with the crotch dangling at their knees making them look like they crapped their pants.

Showing cleavage is a peak, shoving your pants down BELOW your ass is not. This look isn't "sagging", it's flying as half mast letting it ALL hang out. I actually rather liked the look that came before this what WAS actual sagging with just a peak of boxers showing. The all out look it became took it to a level of total absurdity.

I already find this ass out ridiculous look a bit threatening and in NO WAY would I want to see guys walking around with their junk out. That's flashing and has always been threatening to women.

73. Er...
I'm sorry to pass this on to you, but girls ARE sagging.

They wear boxers, a really long "wife beater," and sweatpants that they pull down below their cheeks, with the boxers and long shirt covering the cracks.

Common in our local high school, although not as prevalent as the guys. Less common in middle school, but still happens. Last year, one of my 8th grade girls got "pantsed" at recess; a big deal, but it was accidental. They were playing supposedly "tag" football, and a guy reached out and grabbed her by the pant leg as she ran by, and down they came. She wasn't wearing boxers.

He was mortified, as was she. I wasn't surprised; I kept waiting for them to fall off on their own, since the elastic waistband on the sweats had nothing to grip. Had I talked to her about it? Yes. The sweats phenomenon is convenient. The pull them up quickly when an adult is looking at them, and yank them back down when they think we aren't watching. It wasn't something our staff wanted to create World War III over, so we settled for keeping them up in class.

48. This is, of course, the very first time respectable adults have disapproved of youth fashions.
And thankfully, the proper channel to address it has been found; a bald, middle-aged guy in a suit, sitting in front of an American flag, on a billboard- surely, that will get today's youth to change the way they dress!

dressed in the mandatory baggy pants, oversized t-shirt and backwards cap shuffle his way down Main Street. I don't know if he tripped on his regulation untied shoe laces or what, but suddenly the pants went straight to the ground. All the way. It was sooooo funny. Maybe they should consider suspenders as a fad.

Maybe I should use my tax return to pay for a billboard about muffin tops? I use to laugh at friends of mine growing up who wore their pants like this. I laugh even harder now that I frequently see guys with skinny jeans sagging but I'm sure he could have found a better use of $2,000 than a billboard about a style he didn't like.

63. Don't see this nearly as much as I used to. Thankfully. Hoping the 27" rims thing is next.

66. Do we have to pretend we like it,
if it's considered "ghetto" fashion?
How about "White folk's kids love to be emulating ghetto fashions to buy them some street cred"?

67. How bold, ladies and gentlemen, how staggeringly BOLD it is to summon
the courage to speak out against the UNPARDONABLE atrocity of sagging pants.

How much did that billboard ad cost? I would have suggested that the money it took to post might have been better spent on local public schools.
