Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial (42 years ago today)

Several links at this link: http://www.afscme.org/about/mlk-memorial.cfm

Help Build The Dream

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lost his life in Memphis, Tenn., where he had gone to support striking sanitation workers in their fight to get the city to recognize their union, AFSCME Local 1733.

Today, AFSCME is helping to raise the funds to build a memorial to him on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The groundbreaking occurred Nov. 13, 2006, and the dedication is scheduled for 2008.

More than any other union, the men and women of AFSCME are the keepers of Dr. King’s dream through our struggles to improve the lives of workers. The International Union has already made a donation of $200,000. We are asking all AFSCME affiliates, members, friends and supporters to donate to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation.

2. The best current info on the memorial . . .
is available here: http://www.mlkmemorial.org/site/c.hkIUL9MVJxE/b.1187203/k.8826/The_Memorial.htm

Lots of info there on design, major corporate donors, project status, etc. On current status, for example, this excerpt:

Now that Secretary Salazar has signed a construction permit, the non-profit Washington, DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. can proceed with construction of the memorial. The new memorial will be situated adjacent to the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and in a direct line between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. Dr. King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” at the Lincoln Memorial in August, 1963.

Congress passed Joint Resolutions in 1996 authorizing Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to establish a memorial honoring Dr. King to be built in Washington, D.C. The ceremonial groundbreaking took place on November 13, 2006, and the memorial is expected to be completed in 2011.
