Folks the worm has turned
Edited on Wed May-02-07 07:38 PM by nadinbrzezinski
So I went today to put together a care package \ slash demo for troops in the field, who are holding, I kid you not, a gaming convention in Iraq

So I went and got the dice, and got books out of storage, and then went over to Ralphs to get the rest of the package. Not like I'd ever send toilet paper to Orcon, but sure to ziguratcon, every day of the week

(by the way, here is the link in case any of you gamers feel like sending something... http://www.gamegrene.com/node/790)

Anyhow I am filling my paperwork at the UPS Store, while they pack this stuff up... and a gentleman in line asks, "is that for a troop?"

Well yes... he tried to actually give me some money to cover this... and for once this is an actual honest to goodness business expense, but that is another story.

So we struck a conversation, and some of the people in line actually asked some questions. The disconnect that exists between the troops in the field average muricans is amazing... but they were asking questions... after all this guy has a Buddy in the field, a second one who has been called, he himself has been called and my husband retired from the service.

One of the other people in line is also a bidness man, and he was all for bush at one time... he said he loved my T-Shirt, "world's most dangerous fool," with chucknenuts mug. He asked questions and was amazed that the commercial sample including beef jerky, and bathroom paper and foot powder. I tell you, the worm has turned folks. I live in a fairly red area and for the first time in years I was not challenged for sending a care package to troops... but was actually asked detailed questions.

Oh and the kid at the game store. Well the website said that among other things they are sharing dice (the horror and if you are a gamer you'll get it). So I went and got about ten full sets, not the most expensive, just full sets. Kid behind the counter said, "oh for ziguratcon? What they can't get dice?"

No, there is no corner store that sells dice.

Oh the disconnect.... but this is a happy day, the worm has turned....

(ed for clarity)

4. I saw a bumper sticker today that made me laugh out loud
And I saw it at a country club...you may have seen the original version, a small black square sticker that had "W The President" on it. The latest version has "W The Moron" on it. :D

I think the worm has turned finally

In all these years of putting care packages for troops I have NEVER gotten the reaction I got today... and I did not choose my t-shirt on purpose, but it made the point I guess

Support the troops, even if you don't like the CiC... chief moron, moron in chief?

8. Gamer terms, I'm sure
Half the time I don't know what my son is talking about, and I'm a World of Warcraft/Civilization addict myself.

11. Ok I would not send toilet paper wtih books
to a Convengtion in LA, but the trops in the field NEED toilet paper... so the package included the usual stuff I usually include in a care package... Ok so it had more dice than usual

;-)

17. Some of it is pretty specific to gamers
but the gist of it, people were asking quesitons and where interested in knowing what is going on in reality

18. Retired Goddess
I was the 'Goddess' of a 'MUSH' (Multi-User-Simultaneus-Hallucination) which was an online Role Playing Game (RPG), featuring 'White Wolf Gaming Studio' books. (Vampires, Werewolfs, Mage, etc.) And I have a lot of them. 2nd Edition. (outdated by now)

I'm retired now from managing the game. (I did that for over 10 years, and have handed the keys to the game over to a trusted cool dude.

Anyway, I can't imagine myself needing these rule books any longer, though they might be somewhat outdated. I'd be willing to send them off if they would actually be useful.

Do you think these folks could use them?

I'd love to help some Gamer Soldiers out if I could.

I also am about to get a bunch of Girl Scout cookies, that I was going to send to a soldier friend of mine, but he (thankfully) has come back stateside, and now I'm worried that the temptation of me eating all these cookies myself will be too great.

19. They could use them
and if nothing else they can go into the MWR library and used by troops repeteadly

And cookies, as long as they are not the melty type (Thin Mints come to mind), they will apreciate them

Hell, the crew ate five month old, tasting of foil, brownies my sister made them... those brownies chased that sub across the pacific, not kidding here

20. That's rather cool.
Both the fact that they're holding a con there, and the people's reactions at the post office. :)
If I had a spare set of dice I'd send 'em over...

21. shared dice makes the Dice Gods and "The Lady" mad
and i can imagine in a war zone there is nothing worse than pissing off "The Lady."

i wonder if they need decks of cards in general. you can always walk into a casino or card room and buy oodles of decks on the cheap. it'll be useful, just about everyone knows a game with playing cards.
