Kicked out for breastfeeding? Saint Paul, MN News
http://www.twincities.com/ci_14826344?source=most_viewed

A St. Paul woman says although state law is on her side, an eatery forced her to leave for feeding her son. The Maplewood restaurant says her fiance's behavior was the problem.
By John Brewer

Bethany Morton, shown Monday with her son Dawson at their St. Paul home, said she contacted La Leche League for more guidance after being asked to cover up or leave when she breastfed Dawson at a restaurant recently. Maplewood police Lt. David Kvam said his office received a call from a restaurant employee reporting that two customers were yelling at staff. The incident started, according to the dispatcher s log, as employees were talking to the customers about breastfeeding and flashing the customers. (Pioneer Press: Chris Polydoroff)
Bethany Morton didn't breastfeed her first child, now 3, but she decided to with her second child.

She looked up the state statute on breastfeeding in public and learned that she could feed her child basically whenever and wherever she wanted, she said.

Her research came in handy Easter weekend when, at incidents in two cities, she was asked to cover up while breastfeeding. In the most serious case, police were called.

1. Here's the Minnesota Statute:
State statute 145.905 says, "A mother may breast-feed in any location, public or private, where the mother and child are otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether the nipple of the mother's breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breast-feeding."

3. You should stay home if you're afraid of running into this situation.
A nursing mom should be welcome anywhere.

4. Pumping isn't as easy as you think. I had no let down when I tried to pump
add nipple confusion into the mix. My kids would not take a bottle...ever. That said, while I agree with the law, I rarely fed in public, only because of my own comfort.

12. Of course, it doesn't matter whether it's easy or not
In a civilized world, moms should be able to feed their babies. They should not be subject to house arrest for the duration of the breastfeeding years.

Personally, I would find breast pumps unnatural and dehumanizing. (But that's beside the point, as I never had kids.)

If I was running an eatery (or any other business) and you came to me with that complaint, that is exactly what I'd tell you to do. And your photo would go up right at the top of the "Not welcome here" rogues gallery.

27. It seems like a personal problem for you. Not for me or most people I know.
I've been near women who have been breastfeeding before and it's never bothered me.

In fact most of the women have been courteous enough to ask if it bothered me, they'd go elsewhere. I replied, jokingly, "It's no skin off my teeth."

It always amazes me that my fellow men can be so turned on by looking at naked female breasts in magazines, movies, or in public. However, should those breasts have infants suckling at them, suddenly they get disgusted? Illogical.

33. So what so you think will happen if you briefly see a portion of breast?
Will you faint? run screaming? vomit? And what is it about you that makes you unable to look away? Why does a feeding child disturb you?

You should really think hard about WHY you are so bothered by it.

I'm sure any mother would be happy to provide a flannel square which you may place over your head whenever you might be offended by the babies existing.

31. Who the hell cares. Child screams in restaurant, theatre, etc. ...
...parent may be asked to remove them until they have quieted. Other patron makes a stink they may be afforded the same privilege, and in any establishment of mine that would be the choice offered anyone complaining about another patron breastfeeding. And given that being adult implies a great deal more self control than a child, anyone choosing not to shut up immediately, would not be given the option of returning. EVER!

11. Isn't it amazing? The corollary to that is that people don't seem
able to not look at something. If it's there - they must stare. Fascinating.

I don't know, but when I go to a restaurant, I'm eating, not scoping out the rest of the room.

17. Yet another example of humans going against nature.
She should be able to feed her baby whenever and wherever. Period. No ifs, ands, ors, or buts about it. It is NATURAL.

Any human who has a problem with it should take it up with Mother Nature, herself, but only after I cook some  to watch the smack down of biblical proportions.

21. I think it has to do with a denial of our animal nature.
Some folks are alarmed when they realize that we are a species of mammal. Encountering breastfeeding is an unequivocal reminder of that inconvenient fact. It's oddly disturbing to people who think humans are somehow different from the other mammals that populate our planet.

32. The disgusted response from people is illogical.
It always amazes me that, on the one hand, people can be so turned on by looking at naked female breasts in magazines, movies, or in public. They defend it as an art form, and freedom of speech or expression.

However, should those breasts have infants suckling at them, suddenly they get disgusted?

Illogical.

44. Completely, yes.
And I've been amazed--no, astonished--at the attitudes of some local liberals towards breastfeeding in public.

BTW, I BF all four of our children in public (and discreetly, so as not to arouse shouting by strangers in my baby's face). We never had any issues in rural areas but lots of odd stares in cities. And I refused to BF our babies in a nasty bathroom.
