"Updated : April 7, 2010

50 Dead,180 Wounded in Another Iraq Bombing
Another series of terror attacks occurred in Baghdad, Iraq on Tuesday killing at least 50 and wounding 1-hundred-80.
The Associated Press, citing Iraqi authorities reported four scattered bombs exploded in intervals, with the first one detonating at 9:30 a.m. local time in apartment buildings in northern Shula.
Two other explosions took place at an intersection and a popular restaurant located a few kilometers away from the first detonated area.
Two hours later the fourth bomb planted in a vehicle blasted devastating a nearby market.
Local authorities say that al-Qaida is likely responsible as mostly Shiite areas of Baghdad were targeted."

3. Well, not that I'm cynical or anything
But I just don't believe anything I read anymore. Maybe in 3 years or so we'll know what really happened there today. Or maybe never.

4. Iraq needs to fill its power vacuum and fast.
Each day that goes by without a government can be exploited by those who seek to gain from instability and violence. If it starts to divide along sectarian lines, things could get bad fast. It will be hard for the US to withdraw on schedule if there is no functional government to respond to increasing violence.

As has always been the case in Iraq, we are in a bad place with no good options except to leave. Thankfully, so far, the White House is sticking to the withdrawal plans. So far.

5. The Iraqi civil war between the Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites will progress to its natural conclusion
The presence of the US forces in the country have meant that the civil war has been waged in a very bloody and protracted fashion.

Had we left soon after Sadaam was toppled, there would have been a short, vicious war, but the casualties would have been less, borders would have been negotiated, and the pieces of Iraq would be well on their way to recovery.
