My 22 year old now uninsured
How can this happen?

We received notice this week that because our daughter was no longer in college that she would no longer be covered by our insurance plan.

I called the insurance company and asked them if the new law signed 2 weeks ago didn't permit her to stay on our insurance until she was 26.

Their reply was that the law signed just last week didn't take effect yet and they had not determined how it would effect our plan.

I kept pressing the issue and asking for supervisors and getting the same canned response word for word. Insurance companies don't plan on following the law of the land.

1. Some of the laws don't take effect for two or three years.
"And that's the way the cookie crumbles".

4. We shouldn't accept these crummy cookies.
We should check it out, and complain about it.

33. I have a question. Where are Berni McCoy and Prosense to tell us these things?
Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 12:19 AM by Occulus
I haven't seen them post... *thinks hard*.... why, I haven't seen them post at all since the bill got passed.

Why is that? Did they both die, or something?

37. Its effective with the plan year (for the group plan) that
begins after 9/23/10. Many plan years run Jan 1 - Dec 31.

I thought h this one was immediate
I thought the stay on your parents plan until you were 26 was effective now. We paid close attention to that part because we knew our daughter was about to finish school.

This is a cookie that should not have crumbled, it is just plain crumby.

Extension of Dependent Coverage: Requires any group health plan or plan in the individual market that provides dependent coverage for children to continue to make that coverage available until the child turns 26 years of age. This takes effect for plan years beginning on or after the date that is six months after enactment.

7. I think they told you exactly right--the law has not taken effect yet.
From all that I've heard or read the child coverage to age 26 takes effect this year. I could google an answer, but so can you.

8. Ask about COBRA rights for your adult child
That might work. My state has the Young Adult coverage because of state law -- it runs about 3% cheaper than COBRA; both are available.

9. September 23rd she will be able to get back on. (6 months from signing)
That's the way it's written. Now, exactly how the insurance companies plan to try and wriggle out of the committment is something all us parents of young adult dependents have to pay close attention to.

I thought it was written that children couldn't be kicked off before age 26, not that they could be required to be added on.

16. Blue Cross put my beautiful Daughter on immediately
Even though she is a full time college student, they had started to put me through hoops with demands for transcripts and W2's for last year from where she works part time nights and weekends, then all of a sudden last week her cards appeared in the mail effective April 1st.

Your insurance is scummier than the rest.

31. Depends on what state you're in.
Some states changed their mandates within the last year to require that children be allowed to be covered to age 26. Yours may be one of those states, in which case it would have had nothing to do with HCR.

are one state that already has this extended coverage law in effect. So does CT, MA, IA, NH and others I can't think of offhand

24. This one will be interesting to watch. It's written vaguely.
Sounds to me like it's for "dependent" children only. Does that mean the IRS definition of dependent? Does I mean she would have to be in college? I have read this part of the bill and it's still not clear. It will be interesting when parents try to enact this with ins. companies.

It seems as though when Obama assured the vets that nothing would change it included the fact that coverage for adult children would not be extended for children of vets.
