With the health care debate won, Obama needs to fufill promises made to the LGBT communityBy: Matt Jamieson
Let's all take a big collective breath. Health care reform has passed, and it was a long, hard battle to get there. This victory is being hailed by critics as a landmark for President Obama and his administration. So the question on my mind now is - what's next?
Obama has managed to live up to one campaign promise. Now he needs to start reaching out to different groups in America that helped him get elected. I believe he needs to reach to an already irritated lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
The LGBT community in this country was one of many crucial voting bases that Obama leaned on to get elected. He had the Democratic gays, the Hillary supporters all in his pocket. Yet after election day, the community was turned on its head after learning controversial anti-gay pastor Rick Warren would be delivering the inaugural invocation prayer.
Shut the front door. The LGBT community helps elect a president, and this is how he repays that community?...
If spurned LGBT Obama supporters want their voices heard, and want to believe in hope, they have to believe they can make the change. As a society, Americans talk about solidarity, and there is no better way for unity than with equal rights finally for all.
The next move's yours, Mr. President.
