Court Denies Food Stamps to Service Dog
(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - An unemployed, wheelchair-bound veteran can't get food stamps for his service dog a Pennsylvania court ruled Tuesday.

Phillyburbs.com reported that James Douris lost a yearlong court case after a three-judge panel determined food stamps are for humans only.

Douris wanted to have his male boxer listed as a dependent in calculating benefits. In February 2009, he appealed a Bucks County welfare office decision that granted him $176 a month in food stamps, saying the amount was not enough to feed himself and the dog. Douris later testified that he feeds the animal human and pet food, but argued the animal pulls his wheelchair around, thus requiring supplemental nutrition.

10. They are following the law
I would expect the same sort of decision if it were a court trying someone for illegally selling food stamps to buy medicine. It is not the fault of the triers of fact and law that our society has no provision for being able to feed a legitimate service animal.

Perhaps the publicity of this case will inspire "our leaders" to find a way to make this happen, and not just for this one vet.

2. Some cities have pet food banks. Mine does. If you call 2-1-1 you can get pet food.

4. This gentlemen
should call a pet shelter and explain his situation. They could direct him to help, I'm sure. The court could have (I say should have) told him that, or directed him to a local area which gives out pet food, if there is one near him. I feel for him and his dog.

So recipients won't feed their own meals to their pets.

9. As much as I believe that giving foodstamps to a dog
means depriving another human of money from a limited pot, there has to be a better solution than scrounging to feed it. We should instead be looking at the circumstances that caused this man to need food stamps and welfare, and helping him there instead. It would be better to find him a job so that he can feed himself, or offer him disability of some kind.
