Is mere brain death or mere absence of a brain sufficient reason to say that a person isn't alive?

After all, many people say that a fertilized egg, which has no brain, is human. Also, there are Republicans who seem to be brain-dead, but who are nevertheless very much alive physically.

3. No. After all, you are clearly alive enough to post on DU.
Just kidding. Yes, I do think that brain death is sufficient to call someone dead.

8. For the religous it is the Soul that matters, not the brain...n/t
All you need is a fortuatous meeting of sperm and ovum to attach a soul.

9. Brain death is the standard for death in most countries.
Encephalitic infants, or those born without a higher brain but only with a brain stem, are still considered 'alive' and receive palliative care.

10. If your lying there not breathing, your brain is dead and the rancid
smell of decay is filling the air you're probably dead. Or, just stunned.

11. If that's a serious question,
then the answer is yes -- brain-dead = not alive.

14. Legend has it Stormin Strom was brain dead for 70 years, yet still found a way to
pump out little Stroms til the ripe old age of 117. Most people now think his grunts and groans were gas escaping from ancient organs and intestines buried deep inside him. No real brain activity, but repulsively active when evoked by dark rituals. 80's man Newt shows all kinds of signs of activity, yet has no higher brain functions to speak of. Some how Glenn and Rush audibly mimic human brain patterns, yet viewed under a CAT scan, neither man has a brain or cortex. Just a dark red spot on the monitor.

In short, brain dead gets you millions if you know the right people.

15. A fertilized human ovum is indeed human but not a human being
A fertilized canine ovum is canine but not a dog.

My toe is human but not A human.

Get it?

And brain-death is dead.
