post on reddit: why aren't deficit hawks talking about taxing rich?
Thom Hartmann and some others on the left think they can find common ground with Tea Baggers on some issues. If they were a truly independent movement, this should surely be one way to do it.

However, I doubt any appeal that isn't on the GOP script is going to sink in since it won't be repeated ad nauseum on Fox News.

Think about it: Bush started off with tax cuts for the rich, appointed lax regulators to oversee Wall Street, gave no bid contracts for the wars, and ended with bailouts for Wall Street that cost more than the wars. Regrettably, Obama has continued many of these policies. Wouldn't it make more sense to stop treating the wealthy with kid gloves and raise their taxes, especially on the kind of trading that led to our recession instead of cutting down school weeks and closing libraries?

1. Because they're scared shitless of the rich and powerful.
They want us to believe it's because they don't want to disincentivize wealth, but the truth is, they're fucking cowards.

2. I keep wondering that myself. The accepted standard seems to be
budget deficit means services reductions, never do you hear that it means increased taxes (except property taxes which we don't actually hear about we just get them) or even a combination of the two... just cut spending.

3. It would nice if Dems had the brains to combine it with a GOP talking point
like a ''flat tax'' on investment income or ''freedom isn't free, pay your taxes.''

7. That sums it up
There is this notion that the budget is bloated with aid to the poor and foreign countries.

8. it's part of the ''starve the beast'' strategy. Cut taxes for the riches then pretend those
cuts never happened and we somehow just started spending like crazy.

13. you never hear them mention cutting DEFENSE (war) spending
only public schools, medicare, social security - what they call "entitlements".

Yet, the biggest part of our budget is defense (war) spending.

How about making Exxon-Mobil pay some damn taxes - and other corprats like them? They paid zero for 2009. How about taxing churches, since they like to meddle in politics. That would be one way to get more money into the budget - or to keep their noses out of politics, one or the other.

ANY of these things make more sense than taking it out of the poor and the elderly and the children who need educations. That's the problem I guess. They make sense. Pfft.
