The Nation: harassing methods of subscription renewal
The Nation is a great publication but they need to stop the scamming.

I subscribed online - just to support them, I never read it. Didn't want to waste resources and saved them costs by subscribing online.
Then, when I tried to cancel 2 years later -it got ugly.
I canceled by phone twice, then in writing. They turned me over to collections when they didn't cancel my renewal. I had to go to the post office and buy a 'return receipt requested' for my 2nd written cancellation and a follow up call to confirm.

BUT!

They're at it again! They sent me a NOTICE to pay renewal of subscription. RED INK!!!
It's been several months and this crap needs to stop.

Heads up: stay away from The Nation entanglements.

1. Thanks for the warning. I would now ignore them since you have your PO receipt.

2. Thank you
That's reassuring. Oddly, I ignored them after the first call and letter -until they sent me to collections! A bit worried still but wont act unless they send me to collections again. Then I'll get a lawyer pal to help me out, he's slow now.

They need to act like liberals and not corporatists.

4. I understand what you mean.
I refused to renew and they charged my Amex anyway. I told Amex I did not approve the charge and to reverse it. They did it again. I reversed it again. Do not mess with them.

5. I wonder if they contract out their subscriptions department?
I've had strange calls about paying more than the subscription price because they need the money.

7. I think so. They need to take it back
Whatever firm may be handling their subscriptions will end up tanking them.
We're not sheep and wont put up with this crap.

6. That sort of strongarming seems more popular lately
A couple of years ago the Toronto Star coldcalled me and ordered me to purchase a subscription. Only time I ever felt alright going off on a telemarketer.

8. Conde Nast has done the same thing to me with their publication
It's their new thing - threaten your credit ratings for failure to resubscribe.

9. They did it to me and I didn't even subscribe.
I started getting the magazine in the mail and then I got the bill on my credit card. It's really expensive too. I had a big fight with them and the credit card company (who was in cahoots with them it seems) which I cancelled right after.

10. and now our Credit Rating can make us unable to rent
This crap could make us homeless. Every rental here requires a clean background and good credit rating.

15. Credit Rating should not have a major impact on renting, that is not the norm where I live.
Mind you, if you are renting something above what you can feasibly afford you might get rejected. But if you can prove your salary and the cost is normal you'll find something to rent.

Of course the quality of housing may vary depending on the report.

16. Try private landlords. They may pride themselves on being able to judge people personally
rather than by credit ratings. They may feel they can tell more about you by getting to know you as a person a bit than by just checking what a credit report says.

11. I have subscribed for years and never had a bit of trouble.
A few years ago, I made a mistake and paid twice. I called them, and they extended my subscription just the way I asked them to.

Once, I paid Newsweek twice, and they sent me two magazines every time. I tried everything and they never did fix it.

12. Cool, just never stop
and all will be fine. Just don't cut them off. Sorry about Newsweek. I just hated to see The Nation going down that road. Disheartening. I wont even try Mother Jones now.

17. I let my subscription expire and haven't experienced anything
like that. I think it's a very informative magazine, just didn't want to spend the money right now.
