5. The Apollo astronauts had a pretty primative system.
While urine was collected by a condom-like device attached to the suit's collection system, there was no provision for defecation. The final mission, A.17, had the most time on the surface and the surface team was provided adult diapers. They refused to wear them. What they did was eat "low residue" meals that made bowel movements infrequent. When they did need to go, an astronaut litterally taped a plastic bag to his ass. After cleaning up with sanitary wipes and sealing the bag, the astronaut had the unpleasant task of breaking open a disinfectant capsule inside the bag and kneeding it into the turds. In the command module, the lack of gravity made fecal collection difficult because it would not simply fall in. It was easier on the lunar surface, except that there was less room in the lander and there was no hot water for hand-washing.

On the space shuttle and the ISS, astronauts use specialized vaccuum-assisted toilets. AFAIK, the EVA suits are still not equiped with fecal containment.

10. Turds in space...
I'm thinking wouldn't it be easier (or more convenient) to create some kind of vacuum lock system for shooting the shits out into space?

Back up to the ass dock, do your business, close the door, and the other side opens up and jettisons the offerings off into the wild black yonder, perhaps to burn up like little meteorites in the atmosphere if they fall back to earth.

Or maybe there's some good reason why that wouldn't work, or they couldn't find some other similar solution...

In any event, I can see why pooting in space is so unpleasant.

3. They place great importance on bowel control.
Probably because intellectually they are infantile.

17. We know where the moon came from.
Whether that was worth the expense of sending a handful of guys there is a judgment call. It was VERY expensive.

18. It wasn't all that expensive, in fact it's one of the few programs that show return on investment
