The RIAA and MPAA want the government to install spyware on your computer
The RIAA and MPAA have submitted a plan to the Office of Intellectual Property Enforcement. It's basically a plan that they want the government to enact, and it's terrifying.

Here are some of the lovely things that they're calling for:

* spyware on your computer that detects and deletes infringing materials;
* mandatory censorware on all Internet connections to interdict transfers of infringing material;
* border searches of personal media players, laptops and thumb-drives;
* international bullying to force other countries to implement the same policies;
* and free copyright enforcement provided by Fed cops and agencies (including the Department of Homeland Security!).

I hope to the FSM that the government rejects this plan...but for some reason I doubt it.

13. Nah that would be illegal... but..
some 12 year old in mom's basement will have a fix out before they even get to implement it.

This is so stupid, I remember when Cassettes were going to be the "death of the recording industry". VCR's were going to be the "death of the movie industry". All this whining and hand wringing, yet ticket sales are up, concert ticket sales are up. Legal song downloads are up. And if the RIAA can't figure out why album sales are down, well it's time they looked at the quality of music these days. Album sales are down because there are so few albums worth buying. Especially when you can download the one or two decent songs on the album from Itunes.

5. I see they're still going with this
They wanted to do this back when Hilary Rosen was in charge of the RIAA. I just can't believe they still choose to go in this horrible direction.

12. Bingo!
Before that, "Wolverine" was leaked before it was even finished. Got shared a gagillion times, too and it grossed over $85 million on opening weekend.

The Mickey Mouse Protection Act is pretty much all they government protection they deserve to get.

16. Exactly! If it's GOOD, people are more than willing to pay for it. But the MPAA are scum for
suggesting people's computers be scanned to make sure their movie is "licensed". To these people, and to most rapid capitalists, MONEY is the only thing that matters, not your rights, or your privacy. To say that this "idea" by the MPAA is fucked up and evil, would be putting it lightly. :puke:

17. The MPAA is fucked up and evil IMHO
See "this film not yet rated" it's a brilliant documentary expose of the mpaa rating system (you know, the violence = good, sex = bad folks).

9. Our entire system of IP law was wrecked for KKKorporate benefit
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 01:14 PM by Kievan Rus
They're the reason copyright terms are now the absurd life-plus-seventy crap. A big contributor to that madness was Di$ney, since they feared Mickey Mouse would go into the public domain.

I wouldn't be shocked if KKKorporate types lobby for yet another copyright term extension in a few years. It's already happened twice from their lobbying.
