Has there ever been a Democratic Supreme Court?
I was just curious...I know the current makeup is 6 Republicans, 3 Dems. Does anybody have a source to find this kind of stuff out?

4. Given that the Dems had the Presidency from 1933 - 1953 the odds are in favor of it.

3. Another question - has there EVER been even one liberal justice as far left as the majority
of cretins squatting there now are to the reich?

Until we have some minimal level of representation on the court, they will continue to cater to the wingers.

8. Here, try this link:
An Ideological History of the Supreme Court

http://www.targetpointconsulting.com/scotusscores-labels.html

I'd say the Warren Court while Douglas, Black, Marshall, and Fortas were also on the bench (1961 -1968).

9. Once upon a time...
SC Justices were chosen for their expertise rather than their ideology.

I'm not naive enough to believe that politics had nothing to do with the selection but it was a much smaller factor before the "Reagan Revolution" poisoned the water.

That's how we got a "liberal" like Stevens appointed by a republican president.

10. Define "democratic"...?
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 02:57 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
Parties and ideals change over time.

If your question is meant to ask has there ever been a SC with a majority chosen by presidents of the "democratic" party...
Then a historian could probably look that up.

If your question is meant to be has there ever been a "liberal/progressive" SC... I might be tempted to say NO.
By it's very nature, most sitting justices were chosen by past administrations.
The idea of "progressive" is to challenge the toxic current ideals in search of a better way.
By definition, justices chosen by PAST leaders would not "progressive" in nature unless the past leaders could see the future.
Any progressivism found in justices would be merely coincidence or a product of personal growth and adaptation (after appointment).
This is why I'd be tempted to say NO the the latter rephrase of the question.

12. If Thurgood Marshall had not retired to soon it would still be a liberal
court. The presidential election was coming up between Bill Clinton and George the first. Marshall was ill and I suppose he thought Clinton didn't have a chance so he retired. But Clinton won. If he had stayed for about four months more, Clarence Thomas would not be a sitting judge and the court would still be liberal.

14. On another note - regarding Chief Justices
While perusing the Supreme Court pages on Wikipedia I noticed the last Democratic appointed Chief Justice was Frederick Moore Vinson (appointed by Harry S. Truman). Vinson died while still serving in 1953. That was 57 years ago!
57 consecutive years of having a Republican appointed Chief Justice is just way too long!

16. While Earl Warren was nominally appointed by a Republican, he was one of the most Liberal
justices on the court (and fashioned majorities for Brown vs. Board of Ed, Miranda, etc).
