If you do a google news search for "teacher layoffs" you get an endless litany of these happening in many many states. Are there any of our Dem governors or legislatures out there doing the right thing, raising taxes on the upper incomes to fund education?

1. Governor Ted Strickland of Ohio!
I believe. I know he has made Education the focal point of his reign as Governor. He is running for Re-Election this year and could use some DU support! www.tedstrickland.com Please Fact Check Me to See if this statement is accurate I would like to know, I am a strong supporter of Education!

4. Not in Missouri, Nixon is slashing education
Sucks too, teachers being laid off and not being replaced. Ultimately it is the kids who are going to suffer the most for this.

5. The states are fucked.
Yes most everyone is scrambling for new revenue. Raising taxes in a depression is not easy. At the same time, property sales and income tax revenue are down and have been down now for almost two years. Unlike the fed, the states cannot just float more t-bills and vote up a new debt ceiling. So it is casinos, usage fees, and things like California'a good idea to legalize and tax marijuana. Lots of states are re-thinking 'lock 'em up for anything and everything, especially drug crimes' as a sane policy, now that they are spending way more on incarcerating people for getting high than they are on educating them.

The federal government ought to step in and cover more education costs until this shit blows over.
