Unruly Phillies Fan Assaults, Intentionally Vomits on Cop and His Daughter
Those Philly Fans!

http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local-beat/Off-Duty-Officer-Daughters-Assaulted-at-Phillies-Game-90983739.html

Capt. Michael Vangelo and his 16- and 11-year-old girls drove down from the Lehigh Valley to watch the Phillies take on the Washington Nationals Wednesday night when the alleged assault occurred, police said. Vangelo, 43, says from the moment his family took their seats, a group of unruly men starting disturbing anyone near them.

"They were yelling vulgarities, obscene language," Vangelo said Thursday.

Vangelo and his older daughter asked the men to stop, but that seemed to just cause more trouble, he said.

"I had beer thrown on me and water and then one individual started spitting at the back of my daughter's chair and he actually spit on my 11-year-old daughter," he said.

Vangelo went to report the men to ushers, who promptly ejected them from the game. The man says everything seemed fine until another fan got involved. That fan -- identified by police as Matthew Clemens -- was sitting with another, unrelated group of fans who were also disciplined for acting out when he allegedly did what Vangelo describes as the "most disgusting thing" he's ever seen.

Clemens, 21, positioned himself behind the 11-year-old's chair, stuck his fingers down his throat and vomited on the girl and her father, police said.

"He leaned forward, he projectile vomited all over me and my daughter," Vangelo said with a look of hurt splashed across his face.

Clemens then began wailing on Vangelo after he pushed him away from the girl -- hitting the off-duty officer in the head and neck, causing his ear to bleed, police said.

105. Great. What does that have to do with the city as a whole?
Does the bad behavior of sports idiots from New Jersey justify "city of brotherly thugs" comments?

I'll look for you next time some inbred hick from Alabama does something classless and stupid, and someone needs to whine about "south bashing."

111. There's a lot of pent up anger in you isn't there? Who was talking about the "city as a whole"?
Only you. The rest of us were talking about those legendary Philadelphia sports fans. I've got nothing at all against Philly. Pat's, Gino's, and that cracked bell. Y'all got a lot to be proud of. Lots of history there.

I don't think one drunk fan from New Jersey is what earned the Philly fans the reputation they have though. Heck, even the Phillies mascot is named the "Phanatic".

The character is named for the fanatical fans of the team after an incident during the third game of the 1977 National League Championship Series played at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, in which fans drove Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Burt Hooton into losing his composure after he complained to umpire Bob Engel over balls and strikes (he was removed from the game, but the Dodgers went on to win the game, and ultimately, the series). Another reason he was created, according to current owner and former team vice president Bill Giles was to bring more families to The Vet, as some of the more inebriated fans were involved in various fights when the team was doing well or poorly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillie_Phanatic

With your insults and your geographical bigotry, you're the one coming off as classless and stupid. The discussion was about Philadelphia sports fans who have certainly earned their reputation, probably while you were walking to the Art Museum.

Just to prove the point the OP made:

Philadelphia's list of embarrassing moments is getting lengthy.

On Nov. 10, 1997, a fan shot a flare gun across the field into the stands during a nationally televised Monday night game against the San Francisco 49ers. Fans pelted national TV broadcasters with snowballs during a Cowboys-Eagles game in 1989. Santa Claus was booed and pelted with snowballs during a game between the Eagles and Minnesota in 1968.

This year, fans threw batteries at St. Louis Cardinals outfielder J.D. Drew, expressing their anger that he didn't sign with the Phillies after they drafted him in 1997.

No one is safe. Mike Schmidt, one of the best third basemen in baseball history, was booed for much of his career with the Phillies.

"Ron Jaworski told me one time that he had completed like 14 passes in a row, and on the 15th one he had an incompletion and they booed him," said Randall Cunningham, the Eagles' star quarterback from 1985-95.

"There's no excuse for what we did," Rendell said.

11. Fan is despicable; cop probably had *a little* do with this incident, though...
Most of us would've kept our yaps shut and enjoyed the game. The "off duty" cop acted like a cop--he stuck his nose where it was liable to get smacked. That doesn't make him wrong, per se. But I do wonder if he didn't inflame the situation a bit by his actions...

All that said, the action of these "fans" is deplorable. Indefensible.

Predictably, the cop-haters will be out in force (groan) in this thread. Would the article have identified the father as a civil engineer/accountant/mid-level retail manager/whatever? Not likely. It's done to get a rise out of people, and it worked.

That said, a family should be able to enjoy a freakin' baseball came without drunken assholes spitting, vomiting and hurling obscenities. God almighty, that sentence makes me sad. I don't blame the father one bit, and would have done the same thing if I were at the game with my young niece and nephew.

36. +1. People go to the park to cut loose. There IS a line, however.
I see both sides. What irks me a bit is that a cop should have a special right to not hear a swear word at the ballpark. Sometimes you go with the flow so long as "the LINE" isn't crossed (spitting, vomiting is obviously off the charts it is so far over that line--those things are assault.)

But swear words? At the ballpark? You let it go and don't try to play the tough guy. Or else all of a sudden you (i.e. the off-duty cop) become one of the drunken idiots involved in a ballpark fracas and you're bleeding from the ears. :wow:

42. Exactly. Most people would have ignore the profanity as it is a baseball game
not a church picnic. But cops, being cops, and generally power hungry would initiate a confrontation where others would not. Then come up with some reason as to why they had to act when in fact they didn't have to act at all.

Obviously spitting and deliberately vomiting on someone is crossing the line. However, how many times have cops started shit then came up with rather outlandish stories as to why they got into some kerfuffle. I'm just saying that I'm not inclined to immediately believe the cop's story about someone deliberately vomiting on him. It would not surprise me in the least if say the cop punched dude in the gut and then ended up being vomited on which is a completely different set of events than what has been depicted. And since cops lie as easily as they breathe I'm not inclined to believe them just because they said something happened. Just look at the kid at that university earlier this week who the cops claimed assaulted them when it turned out they beat the shit out of him for no reason. And the same assholes who are deliberately mischaracterizing what I said would have been right there saying how the kid got what he deserved right until the tape got out.

63. Profanity is heard all the time. Most of the time its being used by the precious
children you claim to be protecting.

And most people are inclined to mind their own business or complain to security rather than take it upon themselves to confront someone over something as trifling as salty language.

Unless of course you're an off duty cop who thinks he should be obeyed at all times.

I've never seen any rules posted against profanity at any ball park I've been to.

and i'm not "claiming" to be protecting children.

just because YOU'VE never seen rules about profanity at any park you've been to does not mean they do not exist at the parks i've been to.

he did NOT take anything on himself until AFTER security had removed the swearing assholes ... he did take it upon himself to beat up the asshole who intentionally vomited on his daughter.

and until you actually READ the story and have something to say that pertains to the details as presented there, i'm done with your bullshit, whining, projection and excuses.

You're hung up on him being a cop (no surprise there).

He was being a parent. I'd argue he should know what he's getting into, especially in Philly, but he still has as much a right to express his displeasure as some assclown has the right to act like an assclown.

46. "Fault" wasn't the basis of my comment.
That's a concept for the legal system--intentionally vomiting on a person must be some sort of aggravated assault--that's something we as a society find "fault".

I was just talking about cause and effect. Of course one has a "right" to tell a stadium full of drunks to pipe down. But that a mini riot ensued is not entirely unpredictable!

All that said, neither I, you, nor anyone else here was at the park that day. As some of the posts to this thread demonstrate, incidents like this quickly become blank canvasses for us to project our particular prejudices and insecurities upon. I have already been called a "despicable" cop hater for the comment to which you replied. I don't think acknowledging the potential for an off-duty cop to act more authoritatively than Joe-citizen is typically thought to have a right to is being a "cop hater". Similarly, a person who would shut his yap if told to by a cop might well deck someone perceived to be a "civilian".

Any way you slice it, I cannot and will not defending assaulting a person (children!) at the ballpark--that's what spitting, vomiting is!

26. This would be a good place for Jesse Ventura's rant about alcohol vs marijuana..
JESSE VENTURA, HOST: Imagine an alien suddenly dropped into the 21st century America. He goes to a Monday night football game and witnesses thousands of people guzzling a liquid refreshment as fast as vendors can supply it. Observing the spectacle of the game itself, the alien is constantly distracted by fans whose behavior seems to become more and more bizarre. He watches as fights break out between half-naked fans with painted bodies.

By the end of the contest, on the playing field, he notes that most of the people around him seem to have lost their ability to walk and for some reason, their speech has changed. Words are less audible. They seem to be talking in slow motion. Once the game is over, he watches the fans stumbling toward their cars, cursing and threatening other fans.
Clearly, the alien observes, something has caused these fans to have a mind-altering experience. But whatever is going on, it seems to be acceptable behavior for this society, because all the while, many police officers observe the behavior, but remain at a distance and don't interfere.

The next day, the alien attends a lecture on a college campus. After the lecture, he's invited by some students to a party. At the party, students are sitting around drawing smoke from a bottle-like structure with water in it. The smoke is inhaled into their bodies, the conversation is friendly, calm and respectful, and music is playing in the background. But all of a sudden, many police officers arrive with guns, grab the water-filled bottle, put handcuffs on everyone in the room, and take them off to jail. The alien is totally confused.

Welcome to the United States of America, the land of hypocrisy.

78. Indeed.
It's getting bloody ridiculous. Any other time people would say that the police's version of a story should be taken with a grain of salt. Now we have a rather bizarre story that's only the cop's version and the very same people are having conniptions because some don't believe it.

The story doesn't sound credible. It's entirely possible that it's true, a concession that I've made more than once not that the flamers can be bothered to oh I don't know fucking read, however, without more information and considering the source I'm not inclined to believe it.

I didn't believe that backwards B bitch either.

Uh, I worked with the public for years. I saw far, far worse than that on a daily basis. Seemingly-normal people would routinely piss at other people when angered. We had drunken assholes flinging feces at customers, and others hiding in corners to jerk off at the children. I've seen people intentionally and offensively bleed on police officers, stating they hoped the cop would get infected from what they had.

Puking offensively is quite mild compared to some of the stuff I've seen.

What a joke. Aggravated Assault is when you assault someone with the purpose of doing serious bodily damage or your actions are likely to cause serious bodily damage. I am sorry but that does not seem to fit this story. This is nothing but pilling on charges because the victim is a cop. This happens all the time. I am not condoning what the guy did and that a little girl did not deserve what happened, but I also don't think this guy should do serious prison time for this. If this had been just a drunk who threw up on somebody, there would not be this kind of reaction. The only reason there is this kind of reaction is because there were words exchanged, which the cop could have been just as guilty of provoking this guy as the guy was for cursing and yelling at the cop.
