Contact Arizona governor Jan Brewar to ask her to veto draconian anti-immigration bill
¡Alto Arizona -- Call to Action!

"Alto Arizona!" is a targeted call to action that is asking opponents of AZ SB 1070 to contact Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) to ask her to veto this bill!

The passage of SB 1070 by the House of Representatives in Arizona will have chilling repercussions if signed into law by Governor Brewer. The bill dramatically expands police powers to stop, question and detain individuals for not having proper identification, a move that will instigate racial profiling and fear and driving a wedge between groups.

For more information on the campaign see: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/6190/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=2698

For more information on AZ SB 1070 see L.A. Times article:

Arizona passes strict illegal immigration act

The bill directs police to determine the immigration status of noncriminals if there is a 'reasonable suspicion' they are undocumented. Immigrant rights groups say it amounts to a police state.

1. Good Luck
Ain't gonna happen, because she's just as batshit crazy as the asshats that passed the bill.

Besides, she's going to be running for re-election and she needs to make sure she has the anti-immigrant vote behind her.

So please feel free to contact her office if you like wasting your time!!!

4. Your cynicism saddens me
This legislation will allow any police officer to question the immigration status of any person he or she has “reasonable suspicion” is in the country without proper status and if so, is guilty of a misdemeanor. This would leave individuals with a certain accent, last name, or skin color to have to prove to a questioning officer that their very presence on the streets in Arizona is not a crime.

The racist message being sent from Arizona is unacceptable and demands a broad-based response from around that country. The current governor will likely ignore the calls for a veto but hopefully we can demonstrate that a significant percentage of Americans reject the Arizona government's efforts to criminalize certain communities.

As an aside, there are several young people currently walking from Florida to D.C. to urge Congress to pass legislation that offers them a path to citizenship. They represent the thousands of children who came to this country at a very young age and have grown up here but due to their status face a difficult future. Despite the current lack of political will in Congress to provide them with relief, they have not accepted the status quo. Instead, they are walking to D.C., stopping along to way to speak with people about their lives and the need for reform. All have openly declared their undocumented status and face the threat of arrest.

The walkers recently passed through Richmond and made a stop at the Civil Rights memorial in that city. The memorial is significant in that it recognizes the efforts of African-American students who decades ago faced similarly insurmountable odds when they stood up to demand change by petitioning their local school board to provide better schools. Their efforts became one of the four cases consolidated into Brown v. Board of Education. Of the effort to integrate the schools, Barbara Johns, one of the student leaders would later say "It seemed like reaching for the moon." Yes currently efforts to stop this legislation may seem futile, but any fight for change has to start somewhere.

5. Most countries require adults to carry an identification document
I am surprised you think this is such a bad thing, because in every country I know, it is required to carry an identification document which one has to show to the police when requested. Why is this so controversial? I doubt there are individuals who do lack the identification documen. If they don't want to show it, then they are very likely to be wanted criminals or up to something illegal.
