The Kennedy/Johnson push into space was in part the result of mental illness

The sickness of course was nationalism. The world today spends $44B on it's space programs. There is no reason to have programs, it should be one program with all of humanity working together. I love that President Obama is using more international cooperation with the space program but it would be much better if the end was giving up our (US) space program to a world space program.

1. just seems short sighted to give up the human need for exploration
to save a few bucks in a very huge world economy.

18. But it has lead to international collaboration

That argument fails big time. And Nationalism definitely isn't mental illness. It's just ignorance and belief in propaganda. Both of which can be fixed without any psychiatry or drugs involved.

13. I have not "huffing" anything, whatever that means. The idea is to give up all the national
programs and make them all into one.

19. Would the US contribute more $ or less $ to this international space agency and its research?
I'd also like to ask, because I am totally ignorant about the contents of the book itself; does the DSM IV list nationalism as a mental illness?

8. I think we can have both
I wish we'd spend more on these kinds of cooperative efforts as a means of breaking down cultural barriers so the expenditure on war becomes unnecessary. I like where he's going with the space program and I do think it's time to give the idea of space tourism a commercial opportunity.

21. fear ...
... isn't always a sign of mental illness.

Remember we were only a very few years away from the kick-in-the-gut that was Sputnik. Our manned space program was just barely out of "total failure" mode and years behind the Russians. And we were seriously in the darkest days of the cold war.

Folks were very concerned that the Soviets might claim the moon as a military base.
