Question on taxes
Okay. My wife got her W2 late and of course our computer earlier this month needed to be rebooted completely because of a virus.

So long story short. My wife normally uses Turbo Tax to do our taxes but because of the reboot we didn't have the important file to import the printer file and our printer wasn't working. So My Dad who built our computer invited us to come down to his to re-do our taxes and e-file them from his place.

We thought everything was done okay but TODAY Sunday the 18th we get a message from H&R Block (the software my Dad used)saying our taxes couldn't be e-filed due to either a pin number not matching or Gross income not matching 2008 return.

My wife and I never e-file our taxes before.

My Dad sent it a second time and it was rejected again.

So we are sending out the hard copy we had with the error report we got and a note explaining what was happening.

Basically how screwed are we?

1. You're not, don't worry
Especially if you're getting a refund, do not worry. If you are sending a check, do not worry.

If you aren't sending a check because you don't have any money to pay what you owe, then you might, might, get a small fee. Still, not enough to worry over.

You have to either really be pissing them off or owe them several boatloads before they get really nasty with you.

2. if you are owed a refund...
...you can take bloody forever to get the forms in. no penalties, no fees.

Even if you own them more money, the main thing they want is the $$, the paperwork
(amended/deferred) can catch up later.

3. When you efile as a security precaution the IRS has you enter your gross income from year prior.
If you have it check your tax return from 2008. Make sure the amount of 2008 taxes on your 2009 efile matches what is on your 2008 tax return.
If there is a mismath then simply correct it and submit efile again.

As far as delayed manual filing:
If the IRS owes you (you are getting refund even $1) then no sweat. You have no deadline technically you can file late up to 3 years with no penalty.
If you owe the IRS then you can be charged a failure to file /delayed filing fine. *Usually* the IRS will forgive this for short delays with reasonable explanation. They will have a record of your attempted efile. So 99.9% chance you are fine then again that is just my opinion I can't speak for the IRS.

5. you can confirm your 2008 AGI by calling the IRS
toll free number. It's an automated system.

If you're owed a refund, there's no penalty.
