What is this protest supposed to be about anyway? No one has ever hinted at taking anyone's guns away so what exactly are they protesting? And how is owning a gubn a "civil right"?

The core holding in D.C. v. Heller is that the Second Amendment is an individual right intimately tied to the natural right of self-defense.

Take this wikipedia definition (FWIW) Civil and political rights are a class of rights and freedoms that protect individuals from unwarranted action by government and private organizations and individuals and ensure one's ability to participate in the civil and political life of the state without discrimination or repression.

I think too many people fail to recognize the 2nd Amendment as a civil right protection.

Its true that there will be much stupidity said at this rally but in the end it is to protect a civil right, IMHO.

You should see some of the extremists (edited to be more civil) who post in the Guns Forum who want to remove all guns from non-LEO, non-military hands.

Of course they have no political power, but there are those (activists and legislators) who seek to limit how civilians can keep and bear arms.

There are currently Federal laws which prevent me from acquiring many firearms (for example, import bans on semi-automatic rifles that would be legal to own if they were made in the USA).

They're wickedly expensive (starting prices are $5,000) and you have to get a treasury stamp and local LEO signoff.

(There are a handful of states that prohibit full auto, but nowhere near a majority.)

A guy I worked with was so happy when he got his BAR. Two weeks later, before he got a chance to fire it he had a stroke and that left his body coordination and strength so bad that he will never be able to fire it.

At the federal level:

I'm fine with the restrictions placed by the 1934 NFA (with one exception noted below) and the 1968 GCA.

I think the 1986 Hughes Amendment to the McClure-Volkmer Act needs to be repealed (re-opening the registry to new full autos).

Sound suppressors should be removed from the NFA (they are sold over the counter in many European countries as a safety device *see http://www.reflexsuppressors.co.uk/ *). They're not what the movies make them out to be, they're not 'silencers'.

You can own grenades and RPGs, and Sabre fighter jets with live 50 cal machineguns with a LOT of scrutiny. Works for me, there have only been three or four crimes committed with legally registered NFA items.

At the state level:

I do think state restrictions that keep otherwise law-abiding residents from defending themselves with the most effective tools possible (like the Chicago handgun ban) should be struck down. I think rigorous licensing and registration practices (like DC's byzantine process) disproportionately affect the poor and minorities who may not have the money or ability to take time off to chase down signatures / permission with multiple government officials. ...a regular individual soldier or leo are allowed or expected to have -- not crew served weapons or larger. I believe the Miller v USA decision supports that.

I'm OK with NFA accountability to own those items as current law permits.
