Habitat's Women Build starts construction in Foley

FOLEY, Ala. -- Folks fired up a grill and spread fixings on tables in the shade on Dailey Lane in Foley to the sound of banging hammers and people calling out orders.

In the midst of it all was Tymekia Mitchell, a 33-year-old mother of two, working side by side Saturday morning with about 70 volunteers who turned out to help make her dream of owning her own home a reality.

Saturday was "Frame Day," marking the start of construction on Mitchell's future home -- the 12th house built by Habitat for Humanity Baldwin County's Women Build, according to Lu Schmidt, project coordinator.

The house will join about 20 other Habitat for Humanity homes in the neighborhood, officials said.

Women Build, an annual project featuring a female crew, puts women in charge of all aspects of construction. Still, there are a few men on site because the Habitat's regular construction committee consists of both men and women who participate in all Habitat builds, according to Schmidt.

Women Build, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, must raise its own money for projects, and much of the year is devoted to fundraising, Schmidt said.
