Has there been any reporting on the people of Iceland? I keep
hearing about the ash cloud & how it's affectng airline travel, but I haven't heard a word about the people who live in Iceland. That volcano is STILL blowing off steam and although I guess there isn't a really large population there, they still deserve our concern & maybe what help they need.

My son lives in Sicily and he's told me how awful it is when Etna blows. There's black ash all over everything and breathing becomes difficult.

1. The volcano is in a thinly populated area
If I remember correctly, there are only two small villages in the area. One did have some flooding problems right after the eruption began, but that's about the extent of it.

Not only does Iceland have a fairly small population, but most of it is concentrated in a relatively limited area on the island. Luckily, the eruption is nowhere near that area.

It also helps that the wind is blowing the ash almost directly out to sea, so the eruption isn't even visible on much of the island.

7. Right, most of the ash is blowing out
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 01:51 PM by Warpy
What I saw on the noon nooze as I tuned in to get the weather forecast was a fairly light dusting of ash on farms and farm critters, people sweeping it out of an open milk shed. More problematic is the fact that it's coating the sprouting grassland, meaning dairy cattle will be inhaling it if they try to feed. Farmers would do well to move their beasts elsewhere while the volcano continues to spew.

The ash cloud will start moving over North America by tomorrow, by the way. So far, it's not considered to be dangerous to aviation, but we'll see.

2. I imagine they're getting a dusting, but the island is small enough
that most of what goes up would wind up coming down in the ocean, and of course, any part of the island upwind of the volcano would see next to no effect.

5. I've seen footage. They have ash over everything.
They've been taping windows and making desperate attempts to keep farm animals alive.

8. Yes, they do. I saw pictures on one site showing hundreds of
cattle and horses in fields of dark grey mud. Getting enough fresh water and feed to them would be a nightmare, I hope they're able to save them.
