Levin: There Is ‘Another Big Shoe to Drop on Goldman’
By Annie Lowrey 4/19/10 2:29 PM

On Friday, the Securities and Exchange Commission made a bombshell announcement: It is charging Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs with civil fraud for failing to reveal to clients that a hedge fund shorting the housing market had engineered the product they were purchasing to fail.

It seems that might not be the only allegation the bank will have to deal with. Michael Hirsch at Newsweek reports that Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who heads the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, believes there is “another big shoe to drop on Goldman,” without specifying any more details. The panel has been investigating investment banks’ role in the boom and bust in detail, and is due to hold hearings with Goldman executives next week. The unnamed source in Hirsch’s article says Levin plans to reveal the nature of the allegations as soon as tomorrow.

1. I Think There Will Also Be Some Criminal Indictments
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 01:38 PM by Beetwasher
At some point.

DOJ has probably been quietly looking into things for a while.

Think about how tight the SEC investigation was. It was a total surprise when they announced the suit.

A DOJ investigation would be 100 times more locked down and quiet.

7. That's something I've noticed about Obama's style
It's the stuff that he's quietly having done way in the background that is producing the most results. For instance, all combat troops will soon be out of Iraq, leaving only trainers and base guards and the personnel who are moving the equipment and ordinance out. That has totally escaped the notice of most of our ever vigilant press. The investigation by the SEC into the naked fraud known as Goldman Sachs was probably not kept that tightly under wraps, but our brilliant fourth estate undoubtedly thought the story was full of numbers and acronyms and terribly boring, oh look! Tiger's mistress!

He's also very quietly letting all those ruinous tax cuts for the richest expire in October while encouraging Congress to let the extension bills filed by Republicans die in committee. It's a much better strategy than taking it head on and wasting valuable time trying to get Congressmen to vote on increasing their own taxes.

You really need to keep your eye on the quiet ones. They're usually up to something.

8. You Would Think SOMEONE Would Inquire A DOJ Spokesperson About GS
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 01:52 PM by Beetwasher
And whether there was any investigation on their end. You would think, right?

Not a peep. Very quiet. Hmmmmm.

9. they'll cave
Suddenly Mitch McConnell is saying it's not such a terrible bill after all and he wants a bipartisan solution. Might be no coincidence that GS have an earnings statement tomorrow and are going to look like they had their hands in the cookie jar.
