6. No, and I drive one.
Any car's brakes are stronger than the engine. Hold the brake pedal all the way down, then rev up the engine. You will burn out your clutch plate if a standard transmission, or blow your transmission if an automatic. But the car won't move; assuming the brakes are working properly.

And most of us csn do basic math.

You also worried about a Ford bursting into flames when it pulls up next to you? Largest recall by far and with a higher incidenr rate than Toyota's, so to be intellectually honest you should be afraid of either both or none. To be intellectually honest and rational, it should be none.

15. The OP should be scared of something that was happening nearly a
decade ago?

I'm sorry, but it's not intellectually dishonest to worry about something happening now as opposed to something that happened in 2001 and has been more than fixed.

Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 02:56 PM by dmallind
This recall - the largest ever - only STARTED in 2008 and is still ongoing...... was even expanded by another 4.5M cars just a few months ago

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/total-recall-ten-largest-auto-recalls-of-all-time/2008_ford_escape_ext_1/

http://wot.motortrend.com/6595833/auto-news/ford-extends-largest-ever-recall-by-45-million-vehicles/index.html

More cars involved. More complaints. More incidences.

It certainly IS intellectually dishonest to try and argue strawmen too BTW.

But are utterly ignorant about the dozens of other recalls and issues going on right now. Seems fishy to me... not that I think Toyota isn't culpable! Not in the least! But there should be parity!

I admit, it makes me nervous whenever I'm standing out on the sidewalk waiting to walk my son across the street from his bus stop and a Toyota comes around the curve. I worry that they won't be able to stop for the bus. :(

Other makers of cars have experienced MORE unintended acceleration incidents than Toyota.
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 02:39 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
Your fears are driven by hype and emotion as well as being irrationally unfounded. Worrying about your own car and driving defensively will go much further to ensure your safety than worrying about the mfg emblem or bumper stickers on another car.

i haven't given a toyota following me any thought. i'm more nervous about people who zoom up to the stoplight, regardless of the car they are driving. of course, my toyota is 15 years old so being rear-ended might get me a newer one.

19. Nope... I live 12 miles from their main So Cal processing facility...
And know dozens of union families who have survived because of Toyota, so I have mixed feelings... however, I'm not one to "feel" this way or that based solely on what other people tell me I should feel, and I certainly don't go in for media paranoia, so this issue gets two strikes with me.

No more afraid than I am when a giant Ford, Chevy, Hummer, or other SUV comes barreling up behind me. Most people don't have a clue as to how to drive an SUV and what makes it different than driving a car... that scares the hell out of me.

48. Because only a tiny percentage of defects actually manifest themselves as failures.
And an ever smaller percentage of those result in crashes. Then the chances of the crash happening to you are slim-to-none.

Yes the defects need to be fixed, but worrying that you are going to fall victim to one is just not healthy.

28. I ride a motorcycle
I get nervous when I see a cell phone, newspaper, makeup, food, teenager, etc. behind me. I've never thought of being nervous because of a Toyota. Now that you brought it up I'm considering the statistics, and still not nervous. The chances of being hit by a faulty Toyota is almost nothing compared to the chances of getting hit for other reasons.

None of them were Toyotas.

My son in law was just hit from behind a week or so ago, in fact he just got the car back from the shop this afternoon, the vehicle that hit him was a Suburban driven by a 17 year old girl who was going too fast and couldn't stop in time.

To know what kind of car is behind them scare me far more than ten thousand Toyotas.

If you are staring at your rear view mirror you're not paying attention to what's in front of you which is far more important to your responsibility as a driver.

Just because you are irrationally afraid of a mathematical anomaly does not mean that we are apologists.
