•••• How do you pronounce the *%$#&*ing volcano? (And what's the economic & political impact?) ••••

I've seen different ways of pronouncing the Iceland volcano. Complicating matters is that even news organizations that offer a phoneticized spelling then bring on an expert who speaks Icelandic and the expert pronounces it differently - differently from the way the very same news organization just told us to pronounce it in the same show. In the words of the Baal Shem Tov, "I said one thing, you heard a second and you wrote a third. You thought you heard what I didn't say."

Can somebody direct us to the actual pronunciation? I'm looking especially for videos such as on Youtube where somebody who actually speaks the language can be heard pronouncing it.

Incidentally, the volcano apparently will not have much effect on the earth's temperature, as the ash is too low and not great enough in quantity and lacks much sulfur, key elements for a volcano to lower the earth's temperature. (Unless it sets off an eruption from a larger nearby volcano, the chances of which are apparently less than 50-50.)

But I'm curious as to what effect this volcano will have on economic and political developments if anyone wants to weigh in on any of that.

12. ABC had an expert on who pronounced it similar. Like this:

Ay-ah-fyat-la-YO-kut.

(Without an "L" sound at the end.)

While they were interviewing that expert, who spoke the language, they put on the screen a completely different pronunciation:

'EYE-a-fyat-la-jo-kutl."

Which is fusterating because the "J" is pronounced like a "Y" so why are they giving it to us with a "J" if the point is to tell us how to pronounce it. Meanwhile, the "L" at the end is apparently so near to being silent that the expert ABC had on was pronouncing it with no discernible "L" sound at the end.

That settles it. I'm going with their pronunciation.

But in casual conversation I'l stick with I-forgot-the-yogurt.

27. I speak some Icelandic
Edited on Mon Apr-19-10 06:09 PM by NYMountaineer
It's roughly "ay-ya-fya-kla-yer-kewkl"
The "kl" sound is sort of a guttural K sound made by curling the tongue up to the soft palate and making a sharp exhalation while pulling the tongue forward and down. Easier to hear than describe.

The "ay" is as in the english "day." And it doesn't end with a T sound.

29. My understanding is that "ll" is pronouned "-tl"
with the L being voiceless. The phonetic transcription according to Wiki is /tl̥ /.

Icelandic phonology is nuts!

I saw another article saying New Zealand is cashing in on salmon exports and orchids for weddings all over the world since the ash has effected Norwegian fish farms and Dutch flower nurseries. They said something like an estimated $200 million lost for Europe.
