Ohio Billboard Promotes Breastfeeding, Offends Some
Ohio Billboard Promotes Breastfeeding, Offends Some

Driving around Downtown Cleveland and the greater Cleveland area, I have spotted a number of billboard advertisements promoting breastfeeding. Considering that only 58.5 percent of Ohio babies are ever breastfed, I thought the billboards were appropriate. Of the 50 states, we rank pretty far down on the bottom of the list. So, I can totally see why Ohio wants to promote breastfeeding. With so many Ohioans unemployed, and more women undoubtedly applying for WIC to help pay for their formula, the state could save a lot of money if women would instead utilize the milk their body provides. One of the billboards, however, has turned off quite a few Ohioans, who are offended at what appears to be breast milk dribbling out of the baby's mouth.

The billboard in question features a young child with a little bit of milk dripping out of its mouth and the slogan "Breast milk satisfies." The kid looks pretty satisifed so far as one can tell from a staged photo. There are no bare breasts in sight, so what's everyone finding so offensive about this ad? Apparently, it's the fact that the milk coming out of the baby's mouth is breast milk.

Never mind how cute or attractive people find the "Got Milk" campaigns and the trademark milk mustaches. A baby with breast milk on its chin is disgusting, you know, because it came from a woman and not a cow.

Fox Toledo spoke with a woman who said she liked the idea of promoting breastfeeding, but found the ad distasteful:

"When I first saw it I thought, you know, I agree with breast milk, it's fine but then I saw it with the milk around its mouth and I though that was so unappealing. The baby's cute, but I did not like the milk coming out of his mouth" said Stephanie Swan.

1. But the "got milk?" ads promoting dairy cow pus -- er, milk -- are fine?
You know, the ones with the athletes sporting the painted on milk mustaches?

The mind boggles.

3. It makes sense, because I learned at DU this week that
the only thing of worth on a woman is her, um, "ta-tas." Breastfeeding and babies interfere with the sexualization of said "ta-tas," and that good "ta-ta" high that our culture requires; therefore the sight of "ta-ta" milk is indeed offensive in our juvenile culture.

Tell everyone that it was really baby formula that was used in the photo, maybe that will help. Or maybe change the word "breast" to "ta-ta" on the billboard to help belittle the concept of breastfeeding. Don't rely on our culture ever to mature, that's for certain!

7. By George, I think you've got it! This billboard needs the word "ta-tas" on it!!
Just as some people on DU will attack anyone who dares to criticize what they feel to be a tacky "breast cancer awareness" campaign like "Save the Ta-Tas"--claiming "How can you be against an amusing attempt to benefit A GOOD CAUSE? What kind of VICTORIAN ANTI-SEX PRUDE are you, anyway? Don't you care about SAVING LIVES???"--our pro-breastfeeding ads in Ohio need to have slogans like:

--"Next Time They're Hungry, Just Show 'Em Your Ta-Tas"
--"Babies Love Boobies"
--"It Won't Cost Two Bits to Feed 'Em With Your Tits"
--"Don't Go Off Your Rocker, Nourish That Baby With Your Knockers"

That way, the ads will appeal to the puerile 12-year-old boy that secretly dwells within us all--even within mothers of babies--which is the only appropraite audience for all advertising, and the only way to really "get attention" for a "good cause." Because you certainly can't do it by sticking to the facts or trying to get anyone to really care about a baby's health and development. The only way to draw attention to your message is to make it--literally--TITILLATING!!!! :sarcasm:

11. Hmm, you are right
(I loved your response on that thread, BC, I didn't get a chance to chime in, but you said everything I was thinking at the time.)

Great slogans you have. How about
DON'T LET YOUR HUNGRY BABY POUT, WHIP THAT HOOTER OUT!
TA-TAS: THEY'RE WHAT'S FOR BREAKFAST.

After all, if we gals are only worth the value of our 'girls,' may as well make it work in the babies' favor! LOL

The person upthread who suggested the milk moustache hit the nail squarely on the head -- when it's cow's milk, no one bats an eyelash. America is indeed collectively 12-years-old in every way. With apologies to 12-year-olds.

5. Some people just need to grow up... jeesh! I'd be more interested
in seeing what the "man fact" is below this ad. THAT sounds more disgusting to me.

6. I think they should have gone with the milk mustache
on the upper lip.

It's not that it's breast milk.

For me, the problem is that it doesn't look enough like milk.

It looks like puke. Or, even worse, some other (ahem!!!) bodily fluid which doesn't belong anywhere on a baby, let alone on its face.

10. What if wrong with this? There is no breast and no nipples...
Someone needs to get a life.

In my book, there is nothing wrong with breast feeding... unless the mother doing the breast feeding is doing drugs  or smoking  during said feeding.
