Woman gets probation for starving son with cult
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100421/ap_on_re_us/us_child_slain_cult

BALTIMORE – A woman who starved her 1-year-old son to death at the behest of a religious cult leader was given a sentence Wednesday that won't require her to serve any more jail time.

Ria Ramkissoon, 23, pleaded guilty last year to child abuse resulting in the death of Javon Thompson. She admitted denying food and water to the 16-month-old child when he did not say "Amen" before a meal. Javon wasted away over the course of a week before his heart stopped beating.

Baltimore Circuit Judge Timothy J. Doory suspended the balance of Ramkissoon's 20-year sentence and ordered her to report to a residential treatment facility for young women. The treatment program includes Bible study, and Ramkissoon will be required to complete the program, which doesn't have a specified length, before she can live on her own.

2. It seems to me that Bible study was part of the problem..
Making it part of the solution is remarkably Orwellian.

If this woman was an atheist she'd be doing long hard time for that horrible crime.

7. cult leader and the power over her was the problem. I haven't seen anywhere in my bible where it
says to starve a 1 yr old for not saying amen. The cult bastard is just evil, and she is a simpleton or someone so starving for structure she followed his sick commands. such a dreadful death. horrible that someone else didn't see what was going on and report them sooner.

12. It's my opinion that the Bible, even more than most religious texts, is a form of Rorshach test..
You can find whatever you want in scripture, if you are kind and loving soul you will find scripture to support those feelings, conversely if you are a judgmental and angry person there is scripture to support that outlook on life too.

Consider the story of Abraham or Lot or Job..

17. I understand your sentiment on it. I agree that, primarily, in the OT, there's stories of
murder, cruelty, etc. They are stories to show what's happened I believe, and they're not "teachings" like say Jesus' commandments on how to treat others, so yep - I agree, those could easily be used to get others who are weak or under the strong influence of a cult leader, to perform horrible actions.

again, what a horribly sick story this murder was...

kind of crap going on...

Check out any article in this link and tell me these people are not out of their minds. The scary thing though, is that they are being taken seriously by alot of people.

I just don't get it... and what the hell is wrong with the judge in this case?

15. If she was an atheist,
No Bible, no "amens", no starving the kid, and no problem.

5. Pretty scary part about bible study.
Even scarier is the plea bargain part being voided if her son resurects

8. So, after starving her child to death in a cult, we indoctrinate her with another set of beliefs?
Is that the gist of what it's all about? Wouldn't it be simpler to put her in a jail cell for murder?

It was a pseudo-christian cult.

13. Fucking sick
First, for letting it go with a slap on the wrist.

Second, for ordering more immersion in the delusional thinking that produced this tragedy in the first place.

Bad judge!
