British family tells US hotel they 'do not want to deal with black staff'
Source: The Telegraph

The family, whose principal member has only been named as Rodney Morgan, were said to have asked management at the Ritz Carlton in Naples, Florida, they did not want to deal with "people of colour" or staff with "foreign accents".

Legal papers state their request was then entered into the computer system at the five star hotel before a black waiter was then stopped from serving them.

The race row came after lawyers acting for the waiter, Haitian-born Wadner Tranchant, sued the hotel.

The 40 year-old black waiter claims he was stopped serving the family during their stay in February to avoid upsetting them

1. Since to an Englishman, We Americans ALL Have Accents
they should have been left to starve.

This is a general failure on all sides of IQ test and US citizenship for the Americans. As for the Brits, they fail as human beings.

Ask anyone who has worked in a service related buisness in Naples.Myself.I worked for the Waterfalls Car Wash on Tamini Trail.
Why did they hire me? (I was homeless at the time)
I am White,Speak English, and did not live in or commute from Imokolee (sp) The Owner even said, and I quote "You won't offend the costumers, unlike these Dumbass Mexicans"
Most of the "Mexicans" in this Douchenozzles employ were Guatemalan...Stupid NY'er transplant did'nt even know the difference!

Ya'll can keep that Snobby,Skeeter infested place.

And no,not "everyone" in Naples is an Ass...only 80% of the residents, the other 20% actually use their head for something other than a hatrack.

As you can see I Really dislike Florida.

4. They should have been shown the door. Immediately. What kind of place would indulge them?
Hope the ones in charge have been fired.

They need to act as if they've been somewhere. They shouldn't expect the world to indulge their pathetic ugliness.

30. "What kind of place would indulge them?" Surely, you jest. Ugly, rampant racism seethes just under
the veneer of luxury at most temples to wealth and excess.

Not so ironically, this particular story garnered scant attention in the U.S. media, generating barely a blip in the http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/04/22/1593531/ritz-waiter-fla-hotel-accommodated.html">local media.

The Columbian and Jamaican housekeeing supervisors discriminating against Haitian employees.

22. And there are tons of Americans who travel to foreign lands and are upset if somebody doesn't
speak English. I used to take a magazine from Ireland and was shocked when some American guy wrote a LTTE complaining that they printed recipes using the metric measurements!

12. Racism rears its ugly head in many places
Remember a few years ago when Gore was accused of favoring white agents over blacks. Racism is so ingrained in our society that it shows up in even the most unexpected places.

And the only references to your claim come from far-right sites and people. Places like a LaRouche site, world net daily and some video from the Pirate Bay-of all places.

I'm sure you have legitimate sources and would love to share those with all here on DU.

23. It was a class action lawsuit filed against the Secret Service in 2000
It really highlighted a pervasive (and largely unrecognized) racism in the delegation of duties. Certain details assigned to various public figures were noted to be heavily weighted against having minorities, for arguable and likely numerous reasons. It was well reported by NY Times, Jet, etc.

What I think this showed us is that racism is insidiously unrecognized, even within ourselves when we attempt to be most tolerant. Fighting racism is a contant effort of vigilance and self reflection and social activity.

26. The Secret Service was accused of racism, not Al Gore.
Some of the agents who filed a lawsuit against the agency, just happened to be on Gore's security detail. Gore was not involved in the legal action.

"(24 August 1759 – 29 July 1833) was a British politician, a philanthropist and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade. ..." Interesting history. He was well supported and has been.

The issue here is what hotels should do when this happens. Is there a hotel industry policy, in general? What are FL laws. Should the hotel have asked him to change hotels?

Same thing I said to the drunken jerk who offered me money to "find him a girl".

20. I spent spring break in Naples until I married.
My grandparents were some of those rich pricks everybody loves to deride here on DU. We never ate a meal in the condo but went to every fine restaurant in the city and outside it and NEVER did either one of my grandparents criticize, shun or otherwise insult any help, no matter what color their skin was. Furthermore it is in Naples that I learned from Gramps to always tip well because the servers truly appreciate it. Oil and bank money, FWIW. I hate generalizations about the wealthy. OTOH, the hotel acted appallingly and yes, I hope they pay dearly for it.

Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 08:16 AM by sui generis
Just in really poor taste and judgment, ESPECIALLY in America.

No, the real culprit is Ritz Carlton. While entering the customer request was appropriate, to cover the hotel's ass, actually acting on the request was utterly against what our country stands for.

No doubt a manager or staffer or two will get fired and the hotel will claim this isn't their policy but something a few individuals took upon themselves to do. . . .

29. I'm with the waiter ....
The hotel should have told the family that they would be treated like all the other guests, and if they could not deal with the conditions or staff, to find another place to stay. But of course that might have cost them a bit of money, and we all know that to most businesses money is everything and human dignity is nothing.
